“Incompetent accounting”

This is about the Aetna Senior Products. To them, the seniors are the easiest to take advantage of and confuse. Perhaps it is because I am old and have held many different jobs that I find Aetna less than competent. They do not understand the basics of simple bookkeeping, let alone how to properly record requests (other than claims). As for claims, I only had doctor office visits and those were paid. I called in to cancel my supplemental policy. My mistake. I should have waited until the end of the month but had just gotten new insurance (due to relocation out of their coverage area). I wanted to notify them to not take the next month's premium. Since I called mid-month, they cancelled immediately even though I said end of the month. The rep took the information and put in the EOM date but since it was also recorded the date I called, they chose to cancel then. I called in and got re-instated for the last 2+ weeks. Their records showed that a refund check was cut for partial month premium. I had requested that they keep the money and continue coverage until EOM. They stated that it was already sent out. I told them to put a stop payment on it and just return the money to my account. They stated that they would do that and that the money should be back in my account within 5 business days. It did not happen. Now, I have a check I cannot cash because of stop payment and the money was not put back into my account. Since I requested that I be covered until EOM, they withdrew money from my bank account to cover that period. In essence, they have taken a premium and a half. And since I cannot cash the check nor get the money back into my account, they have collected approximately 2 times a premium amount in 1 month. Living on Social Security is tricky enough without being gouged by the insurance company. Their record keeping needs to be reviewed. In my account online, it shows that they took the full premium at the start of the month; show a refund amount (still waiting); and then another full month's premium. The problem? They did not take a full month's premium the 2nd time – only a partial. So, their records show that 2 premiums have been taken from my account when it was 1 and ½. Anyone else see the problem? If that is how they keep their books, it is a wonder that they are still in business. They have also sent me 3 cancellation letters. All with different dates of cancellation. I called in today to find out what is wrong with them and their systems. Guess what? They will review and mail me another letter. No offense to the post office, but I hate getting mail. To summarize: they do not know how to record premium payments; they tell ‘untruths' about refund processes; they do not know how to communicate properly (one cancelation, one letter); they do not know how to properly record termination/ cancelation dates. I suppose I expect too much from a company that has been around since 1853. But I would have thought that they would have known about basic bookkeeping. It was essential back then and should still be the same practice today. Silly me. I was "thinking".

I'm retired, bought Aetna dental/vision/hearing for myself and my husband. My husband is covered 80% for being with them so long, but his dental bills don't show that - they actually pay less than 50%. Why, because he's actually covered by Careington, even though the ID card says Aetna and since our dentist is in Aetna network but not Careington there is some formula. How was I supposed to know to ask about Careington network when selecting a dentist? I asked if they took Aetna - yes - so I thought we were good! Then I went to purchase eyeglasses, found some at Walmart that takes Aetna, but somehow I was supposed to know that Walmart isn't in MY network. So I ask Aetna for a list of places IN MY network, the list emailed to me shows Walmart! I call and after being transferred and waiting more than an hour to speak to someone it is explained that Walmart isn't in MY network, only for employer provided insurance. And I was supposed to know that HOW? I would be MAILED, they can't email to me, a list of VSP providers but it includes employer provided insurees too. So how am I supposed to figure this out? - I'm told I need to PHONE the list and discuss it with the retailer. REALLY? You can't provide individual insurees a list? The reply was that the list doesn't get updated so some of them might be out of business, or no longer in "the network." So despite MY efforts to get to the truth, I still have to invest MY time to figure out who will take the insurance I've paid for, despite having AETNA on an ID card! I'm NOT doing business with Aetna again and I will encourage anyone who will listen to RUN away, because it is all smoke and mirrors - promises made but after they have your money LOOK OUT!

Tip for consumers:
RUN - don't walk. There has to be something better out there. OR it might be better to go without insurance considering the stress of attempting to use it and the little they agree to pay. It's always a surprise and an excuse as to why their 80% coverage is actually less than 50%.

I'm stuck with Aetna Dental/vision/health due to the premiums I've been paying. Now that it is time for me to get some benefits I have to run through a gambit to find out WHO will take this DANG insurance that I've paid for!

Approx. 1 in 20 provider names returned from a database search is even remotely accurate. I've waste hours, many times, trying to find a provider. Although at first it appears there are many docs in my network who are located near me, rarely is the information correct. I spend hours calling only to find noone. Although, with approval, they allow you to see an out of network provider at the In Network rate, nearly every time the claim is processed, it is charged as out of network. The fact that it's noted on the provider's claim and on my account gets completely ignored.
Addresses are wrong, phone numbers are wrong, and even whether or not someone is even a provider. There are 2 reasons for this, as Aetna has explained to me: 1) Aetna farmed out the job of populating the database, so the data entry people had/have no concerns as to the accuracy of the data. And 2) It's the job of the provider to notify Aetna that the information is inaccurate or has changed. Although the website offers an option that allows you to let them know that the info. Is wrong, and provide them with current info., which I've taken the time to do a number of times, I've returned to the search many months later, only to find all of the same inaccurate/outdated information that I had notified them of long before. Another issue occurred after faxing them a claim form. When more than a month had passed, and my claim still didn't appear in their system, I called to inquire. As it turns out, only one of the 2 pages I had sent was received. They got the page with all of my account info. And contact info., however, according to the notes in their system, noone made an attempt to contact me to let me know they still needed the 2nd page. I'm grateful to have insurance, but for the money we spend for it, I would expect much better.

I am disabled and on Medicare because of disability, even though I'm "only 63". I have to purchase supplementals for doctors and hospitals. I have a Medicare Advisor who recommended Aetna for Plan F. All Plan F's apparently have to cover the same things if it supplements Medicare, so monthly supplement cost is the main consideration. Aetna was, last year, and IS this year the most cost-efficient for someone like me. In 2015, I had shoulder surgery and a 5-day hospital admission, products for sleep apnea, a bunch of specialist appointments, and more. All costs were covered by Medicare and Aetna. No supplementals are cheap! But Aetna is considered "good insurance" by my doctors.
