“Most cryptic human interface I have ever seen”

Kelley S.

If you are contemplating buying a Brother cutting machine, DON'T. Impossible to figure out graphics and useless documentation and online support. I have been trying to download some simple rectangular labels for over 5 hours and cannot complete the work. I have the right file types and have been following the scant instructions to the letter. 400.00 dollars of pure frustration.

I bought a brand new printer and tried to register it on their site, but it said that someone else had already registered my printer. So I've called their customer service for three days now and only get lied, given some bull$#*! excuses and promises, but it's never been taken care of. And when I ask for a supervisor, I always have to argue with someone before they get a supervisor. And then the supervisor gives me some bull$#*! reasons as to why they can't do anything. So I'm going to return the printer and buy and Hp.

Tip for consumers:
Use at your own risk.

HP printer. I took the other Brother printer back.

Verified purchase

In the past I had purchased several Brother Office machines. Ran well for years. This past Christmas I purchased multi-function units for each of my kids/grandkids families, for home/school use. Right out of the box they failed to work. Brother customer service is only open during regular business hours and plays the on-hold game, trying to wear you down, to cause you to give up. Took 3 very long phone calls. The last call was more than an hour long actually speaking with a customer service rep. Was told that they would expedite a warranty replacement. That was 11 days ago and still haven't received the product or a tracking number. Today I decided to use their online Chat feature to follow up. I provided their Incident Number to the "customer service" rep. He keeps telling me I need to be patient and keep waiting while he "researches" my issue. Even with his previous Incident Report Number he had to re-verify my contact info and problem. Now, after wasting an hour in the chat, he says they want me to initiate a new claim all over again!
Instead of just taking my complaint he just keeps asking me to wait and then apologizing for the delay and my trouble.
This one time good company is now a clown show.

Terrible Customer Service, took all day to get one Rep on a phone. Finally rep said my operating system is too old, not supporting the printer. It was supporting 3 days ago before I moved out of my house, and suddenly its not supporting. My operating system is the newest so its B.S. They're lazy to troubleshoot the connection. Very unreliable Service and products.

I have tried to Register my new AIO since October, 2023. I'm set up via wifi and wifi connect. The website has still no Record of me or the machine. Because of site ineptitude I cannot take advantage of replacement ink program. I've had to pay twice the cost at Staples.com and only 3 months after purchase. Ink Cartridges for lower use Customers was stated to last 6 months on Amazon.com website fpr this machine's Additional Information marketing page.
The machine, itself, is cheaply made compared to HP AIO. It shake rattles & slides with every printed page. The View screen is so low and so small it's unusable for anyone with back pain and senior eyesite(LOL, sorta).
Printing, at the Best Setting, is faded in both Clor and B&W.
The best thing I can write is that Double Page print works perfectly 90% of the time. Choices offered for Portrait or Landscape, page size, is very good as long as you remember to reset it with every print job.
It was affordable at $259 before Taxes. It went on sale 1 week after delivery, everyone else paid $50 less than I, easily remediated if brother.com had a functional website.
No, I cannot recommend this machine bc of the aforementioned hassels. Best use wd be for under 30 something's who don't use printers often, In fact, while researching printers, I couldn't find anyone who had knowledge of or experience with Brother Printers beyond the most basic of Brother Printers.
These inconveniences and the additional costs to replace expensive ink cartridges leaves we Ex-HP users no other option but to patronize hp.com again.

Brother SUCKS SOOOO BAD!
1. Instructions that came with my MFC J4345DW do not explain how to lower the two covers. So I search and search. Nothing. There is a swing-arm that supports the 2nd cover in the up position. I couldn't find where to release the arm so I could lower it gently and softly. Could not find ANY REFERENCE TO THIS ANYWHERE. I thought I might break it if I applied too much force. After more than an hour and much perspiration, I looked at a photo drawing of a hand on each side of the cover pushing down. Slowly it lowered to the closed positon.
Next problem, just going to the setup.brother.com. It looked like a gypsy flea market. I had already and easily setup the connection to my iphone. Then I tried to connect my windows laptop, maybe a dozen times. No luck. Just extreme extreme frustration, anger and buyers remorse. Can anyone tell me how to connect a windows laptop (an old HP) to the MGC J4345DW via WiFi or Bluetooth. Would greatly appreciate it.

Having had several all-in-one printers, the Brothers MFC-J491DW is my latest. The control panel is fairly complicated. The production is excellent. It's the ink cartridges I have a complaint about. I pay around $60 for a set of cartridges that include all the colors. I found out that it only costs around 23 cents to fill the cartridge. The copier manufacturers, and this includes all manufacturers, sell the copiers at almost cost to be competitive knowing they will make their adsorbent profit on the cartridges. And, all personal copiers are built to fail after so many years. You could fill your own cartridges, but under the holographic label on the cartridge is a small metal plate that has to be replaced if the cartridge is to be reused. The metal plates have to bought on-line from a third party manufacturer. It's a real shame that ALL copier manufacturers pull this same shill games on consumers.

Tip for consumers:
Go with the cheapest home printer you can find. They are all about the same. You will pay out the nose for ink cartridges.
