“Cable buried”

Rich K.
3/8/24

I'm writing to recommend GR Brothers Construction who buried a coaxial cable for our internet and TV service. My wife and I are delighted with their work. The team was efficient, hard working, courteous, and very respectful of our property. They swiftly completed their task without disturbing the garden pavers or the Dahlias. GR Brothers did a thorough job of restoring the areas in which they worked. We are delighted with GR Construction!

“Awful recommendation”

We used BuildZoom to find a remodel contractor that they rated highly to add a 1,000sqft attic addition. Their recommendation, Gold Home Remodeling, LLC took over $130,000 from us and ten months later, we had no framing, no HVAC, no electrical or sheetrock. The contractor did flood our ceiling twice and tear up our bathroom. When we complain to BuildZoom, they had the audacity to ask us for the name of any good contractors we found. Yikes! These people are terrible.

I can't say enough about how great this company has been to work with from the local salesman Julian, the install crew to my final turn it on and explain how to monitor my solar panels man Alex. Every step of the way they kept me informed with what was happening and were able to get the system installed before the end of 2023 so I can get my tax credit I was needing.

BuildZoom was very helpful. Quick and easy. They provided us with several contractors to call and we went through with the project because of them. Shape Up Renovation did a fantastic job.

BuildZoom helped me get my project done! The team was helpful at providing options for contractors and also providing information so I could decide who would be a good fit. They followed up regularly to make sure I was satisfied, had the information I needed, and that I was happy with my contractor. I definitely preferred using BuildZoom to other sites I've used in the past for home projects. I would use BuildZoom again.

Customer S. – BuildZoom Rep

Hi Frank,

We are sorry to hear about your experience with Gold Home Custom Remodeling, LLC. We’d like to clarify that BuildZoom is not associated with Gold Home Custom Remodeling, LLC, or any contractors. We assist property owners with finding contractors in their local area and act as an owner's rep to help them validate contractors and get through the pre-construction process, however we don’t have our own network of contractors. We also partner with over 2000 building departments and contractor license boards across the United States to manage a database of active contractors on our website.

I see that you have provided a review on Gold Home Custom Remodeling's BuildZoom profile, so thank you for doing that! Reviews, both good and bad, help property owners make decisions on which contractor's to choose for their project!

To provide some more clarity on your review, each contractor has a BuildZoom score. We evaluate contractors based on a lot of different criteria to determine if the contractor is the best fit for your project and how reliable they are. Things such as (but not limited to) the number of permits they’ve filed in their lifetime (and in the last 12 months), the number of jobs they’ve completed, the types of jobs they completed, the reviews they receive on different review platforms, the number of years they’ve been in business, their bid-to-hire rate, their licenses, and how responsive & engaged they are with both their clients and BuildZoom. All of these factors, and more, go into their BuildZoom score that ranks them among other contractors in their local area. Reviewing a contractor's BuildZoom score along with their permit history are great indicators of how they conduct their business practice.

We messaged you shortly after receiving your initial review with some best practices on how to take action against Gold Home Custom Remodeling. These are well known practices throughout the industry as the best and most successful methods to recoup investments in these scenarios. If and when we discover that a contractor is conducting themselves in a manner that’s bad, we do suspend or ban them from our website. We put a block on Gold Home Custom Remodeling's profile so they will temporarily not get any leads from BuildZoom. Additionally, we are currently attempting to get in touch with Gold Home Custom Remodeling about this situation. We will be sure to keep in touch when they respond.

BuildZoom provided our non-profit organization with all the information we needed to get our tenant improvement project in motion. We were able to compare and contrast multiple contractors with summaries, photos of completed work, and testimonials from previous customers, all within a few days of reaching out. BuildZoom also lead introduction meetings so that we could build rapport with possible contractors. Communication was thorough and they ensured all of our questions were addressed in a timely manner. I would recommend BuildZoom's services!

Our experience with Nexxt Home Builders, LLC. has been great! We did have a slow start because of the restrictions of our county, but once they started, the build has been moving right along. The workers have been very neat and are here getting the work done the entire time they are working! Ali and his staff have been very upfront with all that they have informed us and answered any and all questions we may have. We are so excited to see the completed project!

I was having a very hard time with my job and then ran into a situation with friend relationship that after speaking with Alex and hearing great words helped me with taking a better look at things. I have been able to look and listen and the negative is leaving the space in my head and I am feeling so much better. Alex made it so easy to open up and talk. Appreciated the prayers...

The scope of our property remodel was larger than we could manage. The yard around our home is comprised of a front yard 45 ft wide by 25 ft deep, two side yard strips 2-6 feet wide by 60 feet deep and 8 smaller irregular spaces in the front and back yard.
After 19 years these areas had become overgrown requiring a complete clearing and total rebuild. The goal was to beautify the area and reduce its maintenance. We chose to convert the front yard into a small park with artificial turf interspersed around the trees. The side strips received new plants with river rock as the base. The smaller spaces had numerous pots to be repotted with plants appropriate for the sun or shade as each area dictated. The watering system needed a complete rebuild to automatically and independently water each area.
We considered doing some of the work ourselves and bidding out the more complex sections. We interviewed several companies and selected Black Diamond to complete the entire remodel
David Kingsbury was project manager and Max Riveira was the crew manager (these two men were a pleasure to interface with). Jose supervised different crews through each phase of the project. Wet Weather created some delays but the crews worked through much of it The scope of work for the park area included clearing all overgrowth and debris, replacing the old sprinkler systems, regrading, surfacing-contouring and laying the artificial turf. The side strips were cleared, new watering system installed and replanted, rodent screens and new rock added to finish. This was a major project and we are so pleased with the results.
We highly recommend the company and the personnel that made this possible. A special thanks to David and Max for going above and beyond our expectations.

We had a difference of opinion of services rendered:
As I gave an overview of my issue to Buildzoom and for them to indicate "premium payments are non-refundable after services are rendered" does lead me to believe that you had a better understanding of my "services" from BuildZoom. That is where we differ, because they did not fully deliver services as described in our project scope.

I had a choice of two other companies and chose your firm based on feedback, customer reviews, fact checking and my first interaction with *. After being punted from * to * team I still felt they understood my highest priority which was to get through the process in 45 days. They assured me that they could get that completed. Then they punted me to * and things didn't go so well with meeting with firms that your company recommended and provided. As stated before, Buildzoom did not do a good job of making sure those virtual meetings occurred on time and the quotes submitted for review and comparisons. I had the timeline of 45 days because I was very clear this was my top priority. Well we had reached 60 day at this point while she was trying to schedule firms and not showing up to begin those meetings and it was 1-2 weeks in-between those meetings being scheduled. I did complain to Trent several times about my timeline. At this point I went to the loan agent to extend my loan application. They agreed to give me 120 days but I told Buildzoom we have another 30 days. Which means you had a total of 90 days to get what we agree on earlier. Buildzoom did not meet that timeline either.
We only had one construction firm that submitted a legitimate proposal. We felt we had to go with that one just to get be able to meet the loan timeline. By the time we got that completed we had only 2 weeks left to complete the load paperwork and was told then that we needed to prequalify again; of which I could not produce paystubs because of my retirement. I would have redo a whole other process to get qualified again. We were so disappointed.

Customer S. – BuildZoom Rep

Hi Paul,

Our team was actively in touch with you over many emails back and forth with you over 6 months ago now. The last email we sent indicated on our end how we did complete all items in your project scope including sourcing contractors, bid revisions, and contract administration. We did not hear back from you after sending this email. For ease of access, I will outline again our response to you to try and clarify where we stand in your specific case.

One of our project managers thoroughly reviewed the calls we had with you and did not come across any specific instance of our reps providing a promise or guarantee that we would be able to complete this project on a 45,60, or 90 day timeline. We always hear out our customers and their specific requirements, and mention that we can always try to accommodate their preferences, however, this specifically is heavily reliant on the contractors we source and their timelines and availability. This also depends on where the property owner is at in their pre-construction process. In this case, we needed to get your plans completed for your specific lot.

Your payment for our premium service was for the work done to source and find you a contractor to complete your project, which we did. Our team reached out to 11 contractors in your area, with 1 ending up bidding. The contractors in BuildZoom's database are not employed by BuildZoom and therefore, we are unable to control how and when they conduct their own business practice. Looking back through some of our conversations throughout the project, the team clearly indicated to each other the timeline you were on. If there was no mention or no clear communication about this, I can see your side to this dispute. However, we showed consistency in our urge to get this project over the finish line. Our team was persistent in following up with unresponsive contractors in an attempt to speed things up. Furthermore, there were no stamped completed designs when we first began working on your project, which naturally added an additional layer of difficulty to accomplish this project by your deadline. To recap, this project in full, required designs to be curated and permitted, followed by our contractor bidding process.

All of this said, we did enjoy working with you, and again, if not already done, would recommend refreshing your lending with the institution you were previously working with. Also if you would like another recommendation, we suggest our clients contacting US Bank Home Mortgage (we provided you the contact info in the email).

We wanted to remodel our kitchen and had an initial appointment set up with a local contractor that was recommended to us by a neighbor. The contractor was late and I was calling them, but got no answer. I noticed they had their business listed on a site called BuildZoom. BuildZoom had me fill out a very simple, short form with my contact information and information about our project so they could try and contact the person we were waiting for. The contractor who was very late did finally show up but we were worried about using him because he was so late. BuildZoom offered to find additional contractors for us for free and we found a great one- Jovian Rutherford, the owner of Home Project Reconstruction. The whole process was very easy and contractors like Jovi, who are already vetted and licensed, contact you directly through BuildZoom. You can check on the BuildZoom site that the contractor has a valid license and insurance and verified jobs. BuildZoom also had a contact person, Brooke, who checked in periodically to see if she could help in any way and how things were progressing with the contractor they referred to us, Jovian Rutherford of Home Project Reconstruction. We ultimately chose not to accept the bid for our kitchen remodel from Home Project Reconstruction only because we have a family member who is a contractor. This family member initially was not able to do our job, but then became available. If our family member was unable to do it, we wouldn't hesitate to hire Home Project Reconstruction. We were very impressed with the young owner of this business, Jovian Rutherford. He was professional, prompt, organized, thorough and knowledgeable. He was very personable and had good ideas and questions for us. He explained things very clearly and spent about 45 minutes with us during our initial visit. He listened to what we were interested in and what we wanted. Later that same day, he sent us information about materials we might be interested in based on the information we had shared with him earlier in the day. Clearly he was listening to us! He also sent a computer-generated drawing of what part of our project might look like so we could visualize it. The pictures of his previous work are beautiful. You can tell that he really enjoys what he does! His bid was prompt, organized, straight-forward and seemed reasonable for the work involved. It was a pleasure to meet him and we appreciate all the time he spent meeting with us and creating the bid he sent us. I am so glad that I accidentally found the site BuildZoom, so we could find a great contractor like Jovi Rutherford of Home Project Reconstruction!

Acquiring a new home, eventually- or right away- you are going to need some things done, but in an unfamiliar area, it can be challenging to know which contractors to trust, and who does the kind of work you are looking for. I am so glad that I found BuildZoom, it helped me feel more confident that I was evaluating the right installers for an EV charger, who understand and have experience working in my community, with all of the local requirements.

We are building an "In Law" addition to my daughters house which is an hour away. Build Zoom helped me to select an Architect (Matthias is fantastic) for the project and his selection alone saved more than the Buildzoom price. And I loved the 3D modeling used to develop the plans! Since I don't live in the area, I don't have any knowledge of builders or their reputations and this is a real strength of BuildZoom and their database. They have given me great confidence that this will be a very successful project.

I used buildzoom premium to manage contract bidding for an apartment renovation in a NYC co-op unit. The premium team's value proposition is that they will offer a specialized service that does a comprehensive bid review and estimate process. I gave this review a one star instead of a zero because they helped source contractors that I would not have found on my own and they had some generic pamphlets to help first time homeowners navigate the renovation process. These pamphlet pdfs and sourcing services can be found for free and this is where the benefit of the company ends. In my experience, the premium service and team offered neither a specialized nor comprehensive service.

Some premium team support members were not located in NYC so their understanding of NY co-ops was surface level in my opinion. An example was their lack of understanding regarding required involvement of the DOB for a proposed closet wall removal in my unit. The estimates that they worked on with my contractors never included references for a license architect to review demo and alteration plans for a single drywall removal in my bedroom closets. The inclusion of this process inflated my real dollar cost and timelines.

This and other items on my renovation list, such as required window subcontractors, should have been answered and explained with all my contracting bidders. However, it seems they had not contacted my super or the property management company in charge of my co-op leaving my contractor to source this information themselves.

Post contract and service support from the premium team is poor and borderline nonexistent. Once they help you sign a contract your premium team ceases contact with you. Instead you are rewarded and punted to a general customer service email. It has been 3 business days without a response from customer support for the items listed above.

I hope my experience with the premium team and this writeup helps you save your time and money. At the end of the day you need to be heavily involved in the renovation process anyway and no one can do a good of a job as yourself. Buildzoom with their marketing promises might make you think they are an essential piece for the process. They are not.

Tip for consumers:
Buildzoom sources contractors for free and in my opinion this service is useful but avoid premium - you won't need it

Customer S. – BuildZoom Rep

Hi Jim,

We are sorry to hear that this was your experience with BuildZoom premium.

Two of the contractors we sourced for you (including the winning contractors) included pricing from the SOW your provided to us to "replace and renovate all closet interiors, defer to CO designs/previous completed jobs." While I cannot speak to exactly what happened, the contractors could have assumed that there were already designs they were working off of, from the previous contractor, thus not including basic designs in their bid.

As outlined in your service agreement, BuildZoom does not currently offer post-hire support. It is unfortunately not feasible for us to successfully accomplish since our team is small and bandwidth is limited, although this is definitely something we'd like to be able to offer in years to come. There are certain cases, however, where our construction experts are able to provide advice on the build out of pure goodwill. As for your email to our support team, I am not able to locate anything you've sent to us.

In response to your last paragraph, it is true that property owners need to be involved in the renovation process. BuildZoom does the work behind the scenes in order to make decisions for the property owner easier to handle. Renovation projects, new home builds, and many other types of projects can be difficult to coordinate and many people don't know where to begin. That's where the BuildZoom service becomes the most valuable for the property owner as it does, in fact, save you time and money when seen through to the end.

AD Custom Backyards does amazing patio work. We are so happy with the craftsmanship of work. Alex is great to work with. His customer service aspect is exceptional! Alex's crew are highly skilled hard workers. We had our patio covered extended, added rocks/stone to 4 poles, added automatic screen shades, and added stamped concreate all around our pool area. Our back yard looks so beautiful! We highly recommend Alex with AD Custom Backyards / Darquea Home Improvements. You will be happy with their work!

I recently used BuildZoom to leave a review of work performed by a roofing/gutter contractor I have used several times over the past two years. I found the site easy to navigate and left the review in the hope that people in need of roof and other contracting services would see it and consider using Hoffman Contracting for their project(s).

Sitejabber for Business

Gain trust and grow your business with customer reviews.

From the business

BuildZoom helps property owners find the best contractors for their projects and helps them navigate the pre-construction process. Property owners get a personal project consultant for every project.

So much of what we enjoy is defined by the structures and spaces we inhabit every day. Beautiful and functional buildings shape how we live, work, and feel.

Yet construction is inherently complex and can feel like a logistical nightmare. For most people, it can be an extremely stressful and chaotic process. Resources aren’t always allocated in the best interest of the owner, and things often go wrong — costing extra time and money. The list of horror stories goes on and on from people who spent their life savings on a new home and had their builder walk out on the project half-way to businesses that spent months searching for a contractor and found they were not insured after an accident on-site.

We’re here to change all that. Since 2013, BuildZoom has been working to make construction faster, cheaper, and more reliable. We believe a successful project starts with proper planning and a great team. Using construction data to identify great builders, we created a network built on trust and accountability. Our project consultants and construction engineers work closely with property owners to empower them to make smart investments and hires.

At BuildZoom, we do more than build structures — we help people realize their dream homes and businesses with peace of mind, and we help local builders and designers grow their companies by meeting new clients. We are shaping the communities we build together!
