“Best way to find vinyl records online”

Heather S.
7/22/23

So many venders to choose from! Quality of items for sale are clearly listed (as many are used items), and I have always received my purchases in a timely manner. Great prices, competent website, cordial vendors. I haven't had any bad experiences and have been ordering for a couple years now from this site.

“Evidence that Diognes_The_Fox (Discogs Staff) Shared ILLEGALLY Private Information & Activity”

Akis R.
2/8/24

There is obvious evidence where Diognes_The_Fox, who is a Discogs Staff member, shared private information (exposing a user's identity & his entire activity in Discogs) with another 'High Ranked' user. This action is ILLEGAL and despite I have opened countless tickets(over 100!) & have made many reports for this matter, Diognes_The_Fox not only continues to ignore them, but also marks them as 'Solved' without even being notified about it! In the rare case he replies, thing which could happen after at least 25-30 days from the ticket's opening date, his answers are unrelated with the subject or he just copy-paste general template-answers or he has even been sarcastic & pugnacious! I have also asked MANY times to get help from another member of Discogs Help Staff or to forward my reports & tickets to any Discogs legal advisor, but every time he is assigning to all my tickets regarding this issue, as if nobody else should be involved...As this was not enough he also blocked my account from contributing to Discogs Database (for no reason!) plus he set my own release as 'Protected' so no one could make any changes except from his friend/'High Ranked' user who suggested to him to do so. I have also received abusive behavior such "Ping DtF (DOWN TO $#*!) so he knows what's going on" and reported it thousands of times, but nothing happened at all because Diognes_The_Fox said so, and pretends nothing has happened, ignoring everything about this matter. PS: Please, if any legal advisor reads this, I would like to know his opinion for all above. Thanks!

DISCOGS HAD NO ANSWER(S) TO MY QUESTION, SO IT LOCKED IT, NOT TO BE REPLIED!

I had created 2 releases on master/reel tapes which later on were voted (4 votes in half-hour! What a coincidence!) to be removed, because master/reel tapes are not eligible on the database, which according to RSG §1.1.3 (https://support.discogs.com/hc/en-us/articles/*******334-Database-Guidelines-1-General-Rules#1.1.3) is correct.
But when I asked about 2 other master/reel tape releases, the ones I checked before submitting mine and are still on the database, I didn't get any clear answer from Discogs and instead they urged me to ask this in the forum.
Well I did, it and guess what...NO ONE WAS ABLE TO REPLY(?!?!) PLUS THEY LOCKED THE THREAD SO NO ONE COULD BE ABLE TO REPLY! Well done Discogs! Once again you made your own decision, regardless what is correct or not & your own database guide rules!

DISCOGS SUPPORT IS ABSENT & IF NOT UNOBJECTIVE. BE AWARE!

Discogs Staff almost never replied after opening over 64 tickets for privacy violation. All my tickets & complaints were assigned to the SAME Discogs Staff person, regardless I asked repeatedly my tickets to be assigned to other person and/or supervisor or legal advisor. His replies were coming after 25 days or so and were just template-replies without any explanation on my issue, otherwise he was just merging all 'open' tickets marking them as 'Solved' to avoid extra work or just to ignore me. Soon after I saw the same Discogs Staff person who was assigned to all my tickets taking part on the same forum chat which was opened by the user who exposed my identity publicly in a shaming way, where I've also been a victim of abusive behavior such as "ping DtF (DOWN TO $#*!) so he knows what's going on" and more...
As this wasn't enough the same Discogs Staff person blocked my account from contributing to the database so I wouldn't be able to edit anything, even my own releases! That is how Discogs works, well done! Photos attached - there's a ton of evidence. The conclusion is yours...

I sold a vinyl record on Discogs and used Paypal as the means of being paid. The record cost 29 euros. Shipping was 17 euros. Tax was 4.75, so the purchase total was 50.75 euros and the purchaser sent this in good faith. From this I had 2.83 deducted as Discogs' 9% fee. However, I only received 38.16 euros. Paypal indicates that a staggering 9.76 euros has been deducted in addition in the concept of a "Partner fee". This is more than 21%; with the previous fee it is 25%. This is totally abusive. In the first place, it is arbitrary and unannounced. How do I know what price to charge if Discogs are going to charge me 21% more without warning? I am no longer going to deal with them.
They use dishonest business practices and the internet is full of angry sellers saying the same thing.

Hi.
I was charged VAT in an order, and then a second time in costums. First i complaint with costums, who said that no VAT was payed in the origin. I've contacted the seller, and he said that is an automatic charge that the site www.discogs.com makes, but that all the supposed "taxes" are for discogs pocket. I read then the vat issues in the site, and it's something it happens, but that they will make a refund. I've opened a ticket, with all the proofs asked, they don't answer, just keeps closing tickets. They've gotten the money, if i send it to paypall it's the seller who looses and not discogs, and are just closing tickets without a word why.

Let me say, from the outset, that I've never sold on Discogs. Thus, I have no familiarity with that aspect of it. What I can say is that I've had a satisfactory, nay wonderful experience in filling in gaps in both my collection of LP's, 78's, and Edison Diamond Discs. Some of the LP's are those that were on a "want list" as far back as middle school, and I've been able to purchase them at reasonable prices, in some case unopened. Grading seems to bring out the whiners as to those who want everything absolutely perfect. Maybe these children should collect 78's or Diamond Discs. There's no such thing as Mint, and you have to live with that. I've found grading to be accurate. As to communication with sellers, those who were somewhat dilatory simply received a polite message inquiring as to the status of the order and Presto! They mailed the package.I've found Discogs to be a helpful means of acquiring music, same as eBay.

What was once a place made up of music enthusiasts is now at the mercy of shady people and scammers who act freely, also thanks to the site's policy and its administrators who increasingly tolerate certain attitudes. Personally, after receiving another scam and losing money (and reporting the incident without any meaningful response), I've chosen to severely limit my presence on the site, preferring other ones that offer much more guarantees and protections.

Tip for consumers:
Be very careful, it is full of scammers, and you risk finding yourself in very frustrating situations and losing money.

They offer absolutely no buyer protection. I paid a considerable amount of money for a rare record and when I didn't receive it the seller said their account had been hacked and that they had not received my money. There was nothing they could do. I thought I would try again and I bought off another scammer. I don't understand why Discogs don't remove these sellers or offer protection for their buyers. No wonder there are so many scammers, it's a paradise for them.

I've been a seller on Discogs for over 6 years. Recently, they implemented a 2-factor login process. Since doing so, I have been unable to access my account. I have reached out to them numerous times and still (almost a month later) cannot access my account. It is extremely frustrating that I have spent countless hours logging my inventory and building a customer base only to be locked out of my account and no one will respond to my email. If you are considering selling on this site, do yourself a favor and find a different medium.

I have just been scammed by one of their bootleggers via Discogs marketplace for just under £50.

Discogs are facilitating the illegal sale of bootlegs via their marketplace. Some titles listed never even existed until a bootlegger comes along and creates a so-called 'release page.' They do not care for intellectual property rights or copyrighted materials in general.

Discogs are just cluttered with inaccurate information and guesswork which they allow these bootleggers to hide behind!

Tip for consumers:
Beware of scammers and bootleggers! The site is full of inaccurate information and it seems anyone can create a release page and make items look official when actually they are not! Furthermore, there is even an option to buy CD-R bootlegs which is totally illegal. Discogs simply do not care about copyright and intellectual property rights.

Products used:
A bootlegged item that was not meant to be for sale dressed up as an official release thanks to their fake release pages.

Great access to plethora of music with knowledge, reviews etc from contributors

However, as a site it's badly disposed towards smaller buyers and sellers - admin staff strike people's accounts without plausible explanation, suspending them from activity often mid purchase. As a 100% buyer, with well over 600 purchases my account had been suspended for no reason given.

Forum is awful too - opinions are shut down and often ops are victimised. Deplorable service in some ways. Leaves a bad taste in mouth. Seller/ buyer feedback system is also open to abuse

If stick to just buying and selling - it's very good. But other activities such as submissions are also a minefield and not worth the hassle

Sellers generally good but never go for a few points below 100% and stick to sellers with under / around a 1000 odd sales under their belt.

A realistic reflection of what you have in your collection, then don't use this site, it's $#*!! Many self appointment experts constantly sabotaging submissions or having them merged, thinking they know better. And yet most of them don't have a copy in hand of the said record themselves. Too many inflated egos and too much jealousy over records that people don't own personally in particular a user going by the name Opdiner, avoid at all costs the guy is a complete cockwomble who should have been kicked off the database a long time ago.

But that aside I have been happy with things that I've purchased from there.

I've bought quite some vinyls on Discogs.
On the positive side: you can find almost anything worldwide.
The payment system is really bad. There is often only Paypal and sometimes wire transfer but if your money doesn't reach the seller in time you automatically get negative buyer feedback, even if you tell the seller that the money is on it's way with a payment screenshot.
It happened to me while I was waiting for the seller's answers.
That seller also had free shipping until I submitted my cart, then he added shipping costs.
The seller also offered retrieval but when asked about this he did not reply.
I had this experience with seller Dr_groovy who didn't answer my questions and after wasting a lot of time not answering I wired the money anyway and informed him with a payment screenshot.
Even though he knew the money was wired he still gave me negative buyer feedback anyway, when he got the money he sent the items but there was no way of giving negative feedback to the seller.
This seller had 99,5 % or so positive reviews but no wonder because negative feedback could not even be submitted.
I sent a couple of emails to Discogs but deafenig silence from their side. Nothing. No answer at all.
I even found that Discogs somehow deleted my messages to and from that seller Dr_groovy. I had to check my email account to retrieve the emails.
I sometimes buy from Groovesland Berlin and except for the stress I get from the payment system that seems to work out.

Tip for consumers:
Don't buy here if you can find it elsewhere

Discogs is a good site for information on records and CDs. I haven't bought anything via discogs, and only used it for information purposes e.g. discographies, vinyl pressing histories, and the viewers'/ buyers' comments can be very helpful in determining what labels are good, and which are bad e.g. DOL, Rhino etc. It would be nice to build in a feature that allows users to clearly rate various manufacturers' presssings.

MY RATINGS:
5 Stars = Excellent with minimal or no problems. I would recommend.
4 Stars = Very good, and I would use again
3 Stars = Average, with room for improvement
2 Stars = Poor service or goods. I don't recommend.
1 Star = Gross incompetence/ dishonesty/ negligence. Stay away.

I've been using Discogs this past year to expand my record collection, and I see no reason to give it a poor review. Any and all sellers I've bought from have been clear in their contact, truthful in their descriptions of their products, and swift with deliveries. And if there is a poor seller, they will usually have poor reviews, so you know you should avoid them.

Tip for consumers:
Just look up seller reviews before making your purchase, and understand what each classification of vinyl quality is.

These people allow the sellers to steal your money for a product you're buying and leave it up to the same seller to make things right. If they decides not to respond back to you, you're out of your money with no product and the fee for shipping is very expensive. I would never wish what happen to me on any honest buyers. I wanted the christian music so bad I over paid for the shipping never receiving anything.not even a refund.

I've used Discogs for years now.

I've bought many items - mostly LPs - via the site and have only ever had two issues with items being far removed from their stated condition. I got refunds from PayPal in both instances. Discogs also removed the negative feedback from one of the sellers (the other didn't leave any).

Just like eBay, you need to look at the feedback left for the seller of anything you intend to buy AND the seller's response to that feedback. Two sides to every story.

Most sellers will confirm their stated condition for an item; few of them have actually downgraded Ed their own rating after I've asked them to check. I've then changed my mind about buying tat copy and looked elsewhere.

I've bought items from around the world via Discogs, although my purchases from the USA have dwindled since the postage costs rose dramatically after an edict from Trump.

I've!so read something in here about difficulties in cataloguing collections. The Discogs system could not be more helpful or comprehensive. It does mean you have to expend some time and effort in identifying what you actually have in hand and matching it with the same item on Discogs. It's that simple. If you item is recent enough to have a barcode, then the Eiscogs app will allow you to zap that barcode and add the item to your coll3ctiin list within Discogs.

Your collection can then be viewed in any sequence you wish…most recently added, high-to-low value, low-to-high, by artist, by album, by year, by format …it's massively useful.

Your collection can also be downloaded as a CSV file and stored as a spreadsheet. Many insurers will accept this as a value rating should the worst happen to your collection.

Are there rogue traders in there? Most likely…but show me on online platform without rip-off merchants. The vast, vast majority of sellers, though, are fellow music lovers. Don't let those on here - who have ignored seller ratings for the one purchase they've ever made from Discogs - make you think that's the site is a den of thieves.

They're completely wrong.

Oh…and the comments about the forum being full of opinionated idiots…just show me one forum on the whole internet where things are any different. I avoid forums everywhere like the plague for that very reason.

My bottom line is that I cannot recommend Discogs highly enough. Ignore the nay-sayers.

Made my first purchase on Discogs. The seller diligently processed the payment and took my money. When my order had not arrived after more than a reasonable amount of time I tried to contact the seller multiple times without a response. Then i did the "seller not responding" as per Discogs system, still no contact from seller so now I'm out of pocket, no vinyl record sent or received and the seller just gets away with it. First and last time I use this site, it is dodgy and it is set up to make it easy for shonky, shady characters to RIP YOU OFF. Stay away from Discogs do not purchase anything on this site. You have been warned people.

I'm a seller on Discogs, so first I will note that many of the 1-star reviews for Discogs are disgruntled former sellers who couldn't be bothered to set up their store for automatic shipping prices - something buyers at practically any other online marketplace would naturally expect. The current 63 million item listings suggest that the sellers who remained were able to figure it out, and that includes myself.

Overall, you won't find a more outstanding and complete database of music anywhere else, and it only gets better by the day. This alone should merit at least a '3' in anyone's book.

But look, some folks have gripes about the attached marketplace. I get it, from both the seller's and buyer's perspective. But the bright side is that it's fairly straightforward to size up a seller before one buys. A buyer can read comments from previous buyers and make a good judgment. Is some seller feedback removed that shouldn't be? Yes, and it's usually because of Discogs' idea that the buyer and seller should communicate before negative feedback is left. Some will understandably disagree with this approach.

As for whether a buyer would have an overall good experience on Discogs, I can only refer to my best friend who is a collector and major buyer there. He runs into issues with perhaps 10% of the sellers he's not previously acquainted with, and these tend to be mislistings or incorrect gradings. He thus tends to gravitate to buying from particular dependable sellers. I wonder if there's really a music marketplace that can deliver results any better than this.

I honestly do think Discogs deserves a 4 out of 5 overall to say, yes, it's not perfect and aspects can be made better, but what's there is quite amazing and works well most of the time.

Tip for consumers:
Buyers should be diligent when deciding which sellers to buy from, but it's not at all difficult to find good sellers who deliver what they promise.

I've been a Discogs user for many years. I buy more than I sell. Many of the sellers I've done business with range from private sellers to dealers to small businesses who also operate brick and mortar shops. I find that Discogs does a very poor job regulating shipping practices. Many sellers gouge the cheapest and most economical domestic shipping method, Media Mail. Lots of sellers tack on a few more bucks to make-up for fees they incur. Discogs should set the threshold for fair and honest shipping so that this unfair and unethical practice stops. If sellers really want to get back fees just increase the cost of your item... not shipping. There's also serious issues with sellers of all kinds poorly grading records. You wonder if they even checked the condition before listing. These sellers with countless negatives and neutral feedback marks should just be banned. Why is it ok to let a poor seller like that continue to do bad business? Consumers are honestly too naive or just hope to be the one out the bunch to have an acceptable experience. I find that several sellers I've bought from though are nice, fair, and honest people. I also find it most cumbersome to add releases to Discogs. There should be a way to scan the media so that all of the data gets entered in accurately and efficiently. Discogs needs to do a better job at regulating scalpers. If the media is 2 years old or less they should require it only be sold for the suggested retail value. Any account attempting to sell 3 or more copies after 2 years for 50% more than the original retail price should be suspended. All sellers should be required to provide clear terms. Discogs should really have a standardized template that all sellers must agree to. It's disappointing that Discogs offers a "make offer", but if a seller declines they are unable to counter offer. Sellers should also have option to initiate a bundle discount for customers buying multiple items. It's ridiculous Discogs hits sellers with this high fees when there's so much room for improvement. I'm grateful for the vast knowledge base that is Discogs. I do like how fairly easy it is to find all the different pressings, versions, and more.
