“MagJack VOIP service”

It is the worst experience. Called 12 times to try to speak with billing department and was never about to be connected to the Billing Dept. Send an email requesting a call from Billing Department and simply received a standard email response. It seems that all services are routed to Off Shore and you can never get a USA representative on the phone. I can call my local representative and am able to speak with their representative than I can with the Billing Dept.

MagicJack is an absolute joke. This company is run by a bunch of scabs. They barely provide a "service". The product doesn't work more than the warranty holds. They do not stand by their product, their tech support is absolutely useless and the billing department hangs up on you when you want to find a solution. This company is a disgrace. It's clear they just want your money and don't give a f**k about you after that. A cheap service is never a good service. Run fast and far from these clowns unless you like to flush your money.

Verified purchase

I was a long time customer of MagicJack but stopped using their service in August 2021, at which time I allowed my one and only phone number to expire (it had been renewed for 1 year in July 2020. When the phone number expired in 2021 the device became "inactive" and I never used the service again. I did NOT have my account authorized for "auto-renew". Then in Feb/March 2022 MagicJack took it upon themselves to charge my VISA card $45.05 for what they called an "auto-renewal". As soon as I saw this on my card statement I contacted MagicJack and informed them the service had not been used since August 2021 and that I had not requested or authorized any renewal of service or charge to my credit card. They claimed they had sent me email notification of their intention to charge me (which I never received) and they listed my phone number (which had been deactivated over 6 months earlier). In spite of never receiving their claimed emails, never authorizing "auto renewal" and not even having a phone number or activated device to renew, MagicJack charged me anyways and when I complained they stated that REFUNDS were not given. So they screwed me out of $45.05. They did it intentionally and knowingly. Please do NOT deal with this company. They are crooks.

Tip for consumers:
DO NOT give them your credit card info... they will abuse it.

I've had magic Jack for almost five years. I've been without a telephone for weeks since my subscription ran out. Also, at the same time my device mysteriously breaks every three years too ($40), and they never replace it. Now, I upgraded for three more years with a new magic jack device, and still have no dial tone yet after two weeks.

When it works its fine, but when it breaks your going to have a headache to wait for weeks. They try to help, but there technical department is slow and not set up very well for good enough service. Right now, I'm trying to re-subscribe with no success, maybe tomorrow. God forbid I need to make a 911 call, I'll keep my fingers crossed everyday. I've heard of google voice but not sure if they're any better?

Tip for consumers:
Maybe try Google Voice, but not sure?

I have had the MagicJack for two years now. The product is perfect and works wonderfully well. Saved a bundle on long distance fees. Wouldn't get rid of it for the world! The problem is the Company... When you try to talk to someone to ask a question... I spent over an hour with an "agent" who sent me to another "agent", and all this time, they have prerecorded answers that tell you "Sorry to keep you waiting, I will be right with you"... one after the other, and they have you waiting for an extremely long time before you get the tiniest answer. I got se frustrated, I asked where I could file a complaint. They gave me the same place as the other person mentionned, and when I typed it, it got your site... I will be trying the other site the previous person mentionned. I hope they get a real phone number soon, because the product is genius, the company smells like a dead rat.

I was a long time customer of the Magic Jack, at least 8 years. The phone service quality was somewhat between poor to mid level, frequently I had to redial in order to hear anything or to avoid noise. However, last year at the annual renewal time Magic Jack sales person took my credit card payment for 1 year service and within a few weeks I noticed they charged me twice the amount what was 1year subscription. I called them for 3 times with no refund so I cancelled one of the payments and they cut my service right away. I called their Billing Department and emailed them a proof of double charge. They restored my service. This year renewal they blocked my payment and cut the service. Their Billing Department wants $25 penalty for the last year cancellation of the 2nd charge they did in mistake. I decided not to argue and have my phone of agreed to the penalty but the service was not restored and they do not care about anything. My complain was ignored and not answered so far.

The moment you paid money to MagicJack you are in trouble.

It could work a week or a month. And then it stops and no help will be available.

I used several devices for 8 years. Every year the service was declining. It simply does not work anymore!

Avoid at all costs!

I have a very strong feeling they are preparing to go out of business. No company in sound mind would so brutally abuse its customers..

Magicjack is the coolest thing ever. You can call from your phone to any phone in any state in America. They also provide a device for your computer so that you an pick up calls in any place in Canada and in the U.S. I've researched further more about magicjack and it landed me to a post in a review site called reviewsofwebsites.com. Post saying that services in magijack has expired. I just need to know if that' true. Please leave a cooment.

Never ever pay MJ in advance. The overwhelming echoes and endless static prevent you from hearing a thing or thinking clearly when trying to talk to someone on the phone. MagicJack said they are keeping my money and that I am screwed, Ha Ha!. They said I can cancel after a year, even though I can make no phone calls. And defiant, they won't even talk to me about the problem unless I jump thru several hoops and provide a blood and DNA sample to prove I am a customer, despite providing my account number. Once MJ has your money, MJ couldn't care less that you have an unusable service. Treating customers fair is inconceivable to MJ. All that matters is their Gestapo Law in Section 30, item ************** of their penal code they'll quote to you that says MJ has the right to screw over any and all customers any time they wish. It is of no concern to MJ that customers can not make a phone call. Don't even start phone service with them

First off let me start with the HORRIBLE customer service!
Which leads to the second thing... their app worked good for less than a year till I heard people saying they were trying to reach me and they couldn't get through. Tested it for myself and sure enough I was paying for a service and it wasn't working... who knows for how long!

I contacted their live chat (Rosa) and explained the problem. It's clear she was in no way technically minded and offered many basic things. However not knowing the problem I did all of those and none worked one after the other. She then gave me a speed test to do and while it was running I had to go back to her because of her impatience "haven't heard you for a while". So the last part of the test didn't finish. So she then "assumed" this was why it was not working. I told her my internet is the same as it has been for years and it's only recently that MJ stopped working. I said I'll do the full test again if she gave time for it to complete. Did that and by the time I got back she disconnected. RUDE INADEQUATE STAFF!

Anyway... so I'm still paying for a service that's not working and MJ has staff that can't help.

Magic Jack promises one year of service if you purchase the magic Jack device, after purchasing the device and paying to transfer my home phone number to their service. I received a phone call demanding 153.00 for a year plan that I had no idea was required before I purchased the service( I might not have had a problem with this if I had known in advance). It is not conveyed in any of their advertisements, or their agreements, I have a problem with pay now, be honest later. This information should have been just as public as all the other information in their ads the caller threatened to disconnect my service I told him to go ahead and he did. I wrote to the company to complain about their lack of transparency I have not yet received a reply I was able to return the equipment for a refund but I lost my original home number when I connected service with another company. I fully intend to make as many as possible aware of my experience with this company

Magicjack website shows calls to Brazil are. 05 cents per minute. I paid over $50 total in one month. When I made a call, which lasted a few minutes, the next time I made a call the minutes/money was gone each time. The last time we could not even hear each other and said nothing but what to eachother the whole time. I called magicjack customer service, they told me the money would be refunded back to my credit card. It was not. I spent another 30 minutes on hold and on the phone with them (rude foreigners) and this time they refuse to refund anything. For $50 I should have gotten 1000 minutes or 16 hours of talking for what I paid magicjack.

I did several hours worth of "live chats" since they have robots instead of people working for them, obviously, with no customer service number to call for tech support, they know we'd hear there digitized voices and catch on. Well the jig is up Magic Jack we are all onto you! The service works fine for me, on the voicemail outgoing and incoming calls, but no matter what phone i plug into it, even looking at the REN of the phone model that "should work" with the electric output of the magic jack no phone will produce a ringtone, thus meaning i cannot use my cordless phone answering machine i have to use their voicemail. I jiggered mine and downloaded that stupid magic app they have onto a tablet that sits by my phone and now that acts as a "faux" ringer. All and all I give it 2.5 thumbs down and a half puppy paw down. Tootles bots

Purchased the magicjack plus a few years back (expensive) ported my number to it, charged me every year to keep the number, had to replace device 3 times last year after 6 months, charged me to replace it each time, now canceling my service they are holding my number not letting me port it out. Not the ecomomical service they boast about, and inconveinent when it goes out have to wait for them to mail it to you

MagicJack offers virtually no customer support, and no phone contact except a line for billing matters. I answer questions about a great many websites and companies for a help site, and magicJack engenders by far the most complaints. Many of those complaints have to do with not being able to get the device to work (perhaps after it has worked just fine for a while). Others concern renewal nags *after* the renewal has been purchased, or paid renewals that did not renew service—or, most troubling of all, charges for calls whose cost should according to the company's promotions be covered by the purchase price.

MagicJack's justification for these unexpected charges is this provision in the middle of magicJack's extensive hard-to-read Terms of Service:

"We may require prepaid purchase and/or we may charge you for calls to conference lines, platforms and certain high cost calls, or any call wherein we incur a cost from another carrier."

The average consumer, even if he or she were to look over the Terms of Service, will not grasp the import of this nearly-hidden provision.

Some magicJack customers are happy with the product. I don't advise however taking that chance.

Purchased a standard magic jack on 10/29/2011 from RITE AID in Clayton, NC
Totaling $32.01. That does not include the additional years purchased which expire on 10/29/2014. Installed the item and it worked rather well while we lived in a single family residence however upon moving to an extended stay facility on 01/15/2012 we had nothing but problems and issues with incoming and outgoing calls breaking up badly. We got no resolve from magic jack for the numerous contact attempts and since we could not use the device when we called to CLOSE down the account on 01/04/2013 we got NO REFUND for the remaining subscription that did not expire until 10/29/2014 either. Would avoid this web site because of all the hipe over a device that does not work properly.

This did not get posted in September, so trying again.
Ever year on renewal, I try to email or live chat them about their costs. Every year, they ignore my emails. I never get a reply (I got all emails in and out since signing up with them ten years or so ago, so I can easily prove). Their system also still can not handle DST on my digital phone at home. Now, I do not make phone calls, so I prefer email and chat, but every email address I gather from them over the years, all block incomings. Their live chat, no living human is ever on it. Trying to "leave a message" is a game of clicking the right "I know what you want so here are pre-filled answers for you" menus.
I would love to get rid of them, but I try to find an alternative that is cheaper and allows me to keep the number (because people have it memorized after all these years) and has an active customer service (as in humans, not auto-machines or "virtual bot" junk.

I think this sites policies and customer service is ridiculous at best, and dirty at worst.
I renewed my magicjack subscription on tuesday (it is now saturday). And I changed my mind because I can not afford it and I wanted to change my plan to a cheaper plan or cancel it. I thought this is fine because I just renewed it 4 days ago so they should let me have some leeway to change my mind like this. Well, on looking that the website there is no security for subscribers. They have no mailing address or phone number. No company contacts and names of real managers who run the site. The only way to contact them is some anonymous "online help" button where you get to chat with any random person with just a first name, who is supposedly a "technician". They will not answer your questions right away and spend at least 5 minutes to give a very vague answer. When you ask them directly for a name or contact of the managers or have a complaint about their services they give you a blanket and very vague answer like "there are company protocols and we must follow them". They do not tell you runs the company and where you can reach a real person by phone or in person, they do not give you a general email to contact, it is something like "*******@magicjack.com". I am not even sure if that is a real email. Maybe the "technician" who gave me that email just made it up on the spot to recieve my complaints. Beware of this company! It seems like a good deal for phones. But as I have seen in the VOIP business, these companies come and go like travelling circuses, and there is no information on this website to show that the owners of this site can not just disappear anytime with everyones money (they do not put up real business contacts and details). BEWARE!
