The company's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning its subscription model and customer service. Many users report unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling subscriptions, and a lack of responsive support, leading to perceptions of deceptive practices. While some customers acknowledge the potential value of the service for avid readers, these positives are overshadowed by frustrations with the platform's functionality and the quality of customer interactions. Overall, the feedback indicates a pressing need for improved communication and more transparent billing practices to restore customer trust.

The book I was in the middle of reading was removed from my library and marked "for purchase only". After almost a week of emails, they refused to refund me or allow me to finish the book! I wouldn't risk joining Scribd as there's nothing worse than having the book pulled out of your hand when you're in the middle of reading it! No fun to pay to read the first half of a book. I'm canceling my membership since I gave them a chance to make it right and all they offered was "apologies for the inconvenience."
I had 2 books uploaded to scribd, they sold very nicely, i got email that i will receive 49.90 for my books sale to paypal. 6 days later they send me email that they blocked to purchase book from me to other people. I tried to contact them, they didn't reply me, and took away my 49.90$. When i tried to contact them about payment how to pay for subscription they answered immediately. But when i contacted them how to get payed for my books, there is no one answering. Just $#*!ing wow. NOT RECOMMEND BEWARE SELLERS
Hi Mentia! I'm really sorry to hear about the difficulty you have experienced. I sent you a private message on SiteJabber last on July 8th, but I haven't heard back from you. We strive to answer all our support requests promptly, and I'd really like both help you and ensure nothing's slipped through the cracks. Please let me know what email address was used when you wrote into us, or the ticket number you received. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Service
After two attempts to discuss the horrible content I received I need to warn everyone to avoid buying anything from this site.
I just wanted to follow up on your support ticket. Although I'm very sorry that you were unable to contact the seller for assistance, I'm glad we were able to refund your purchase. Our customer service team is happy to help at support@scribd.com should you or anyone have trouble with any future Scribd purchase. -Jerry, Scribd Customer Service
DON"T SIGN UP! I paid for a year subscription and can't use it. I forgot my password. I clicked on the link that says "forgot password", I was suppose to receive an email allowing me to reset my password. NEVER received it. I contacted customer service and all they did was create a ticket. It is 2 weeks later and I still haven't received a n email or anything that will allow me to get access to my account. I paid almost $50 for a yearly membership. Scribd is some $#*!!
Hello Amy. I'm really sorry to hear about your trouble. I sent you a private message on SiteJabber last Thursday but I haven't heard back from you. We strive to answer all our support requests promptly, and I'd really like both help you and ensure nothing's slipped through the cracks. I've looked for your ticket and found one that seems to match—#792581 from "Amy Crews" with a yearly membership, sent on Apr 20 and describing password reset problem—but that one was resolved after a couple of email exchanges between Apr 22 and Apr 27. Please reply to my private message with your ticket number and we'll get you the access you paid for. Thanks! --Jerry Goure, Customer Service Manager
This company is fraudulent and prays upon customers, the creators, Trip Adler and Jared Friedman are sick animals because of what they do. You sign up for a one time service, then they charge you a monthly subscription (without the customer known... since you signed up for a stated "one time service fee") of $10.
Someone needs to sue these sickos.
Hi John, I just want to make sure you've seen the private message I sent you here last week. I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a negative experience with Scribd. If you were recently charged for a subscription you didn't intend to purchase and didn't use, we'd be happy to refund the recent charge. Please email us at support@scribd.com and include your order number (from the receipt that should have been emailed to you) and the email address with which you registered for Scribd. If you've already emailed our support team and received a ticket number, please go ahead and reply to my private message with your ticket number and I'll make extra certain we get this sorted out. --Jerry Goure, Customer Service Manager
I want to ask, why i deducted too much eventhough i subscribed for an hour and decided to unsubcribe member after i read information regarding of my research. I checked my statement of account yesterday and i found out that you deducted more than of what i expected.
This app is simple and straight forward until you try to cancel your membership. Suddenly you are forced to jump through all sorts of hoops that lead to a dead end. Following the very instructions given by the app itself can't be done because you are instructed to click on a "cancel premium membership" button that doesn't exist. Cancelling membership through the site according to its own instructions, you have to repeatedly click "continue with cancellation" for almost 10 minutes before you are asked why you want to leave and forced to click one of the reasons before able to click "continue with cancellation" once more which brings you to a page not found message. If you mistakenly click the much larger and highlighted "stay with scribd" button during any of this you are immediately brought to your home page and left to start all over. This crap must be illegal.
I attempted to purchase a downloaded copy of "Heresies," by Thomas Szasz (1976) from Scribd today--I wanted to search the PDF for particular phrases. The website offers one-time, monthly, and annual subscriptions, and I wanted to check it out before committing to a subscription, so I requested one-time access.
I used PayPay to pay for the $8.99 one-time fee. PayPal delivered, but the transaction hung at this point, and attempts to return to Scribd took me right back to the previous "choose your subscription" menu, with no record of my payment. Bad design! After reading the reviews of Scribd on SiteJabber, I decided not to try to get my book through any of the other methods offered. NOT RECOMMENDED!

In response to my complaint, Scribd Support promptly gave me extra days of access until I was able to download the file I wanted. So, they get a boost in their overall rating. However, this was a "known problem," and what they should have done was disable the PayPal payment option until it was fixed--rather than letting customers stumble into it.
Hi James. I'm really sorry to hear about your problems with the 24-hour pass. We absolutely want to make sure you get the full day of access that you paid for and can download the document you're interested in. If you haven't already done so, please email our customer service team at support@scribd.com and we'll be happy to sort this out. --Jerry Goure, Scribd Customer Service Manager
I love the app, however I decided I didn't have time to read much, so I set the app to stop at the end of the first free month. I'm getting charged and not looking for a renewal.
Hi Joel. I'm so sorry to hear about the unwanted charge! We'll be able to figure out what happened and make sure you're compensated for unused time on the site. If you haven't done so already, please send a message to us at support@scribd.com and we'll be happy to help. Please include the email address you used when you registered on Scribd as well as the order number for the membership if you still have it. We look forward to hearing from you! -- Jerry, Scribd Customer Service Manager
Update: a while ago I posted a review, I tried to set up a one-month account but it was set up as a yearly account that charged me monthly, then I couldn't delete my account.
Well, I contacted their support email line, my account was cancelled, the extra charges refunded, and I haven't been charged again.
So either their support team is suspiciously good for the shady as $#*! site, or I got the one decent support member whose kindness is about to be beaten out of them by that overgrown condom failure of a website.
Hi Izzie. I'm so sorry for the trouble! I apologize for the misunderstanding; our premium memberships are a recurring fee until canceled from renewing. We have a single day pass that's a one-time charge only, but all other plans are a recurring fee until canceled. If you haven't done so already, please email us at support@scribd.com and we'll happily get this resolved for you. Please include the email address you used to register on Scribd and the order number from the confirmation email we sent at the time of purchase. If you don't have that information, please include the last 4 digits of your card number (please do not include the full number for your own security) and the date of the charge instead. Once you get in touch, we'll have it handled for you as quickly as possible. We look forward to hearing from you! -- Jerry, Scribd Customer Service Manager
WTF?! Not sure how you got my bank account info to charge it yesterday, it but I will be disputing it... have no idea what the reference #*******621
Hi Colleen. I'm sorry to hear you got an unexpected charge! If you email support@scribd.com we'll make things right. So that we can locate the charge in our system, please be sure to include the last 4 digits of your card number, the date of the charge, and the amount you were charged. (That reference # you mentioned is only for you and your bank, I'm afraid, and we can't use it to look up the charge.) If the charge mentions PayPal, please let us know your PayPal email as well; that'll help a lot. Thanks; we look forward to helping you! --Jerry, Scribd Customer Service Manager
I was a seller on scribd for study guides. I got a false DMCA against me and had to wait an entire month before they would restore my content. They then audited me, closed my seller status, and now I am no longer able to sell anything in their stores. It's crazy when scribd doesn't even care about it's sellers. If you are a seller on scribd, I recommend extreme caution.
Beware. Scribd.com is a scam site. They just charged my debit and I had never heard of them. The weird thing is that on their site, I logged in with my AMAZON account email and password, a combination I have never had with any other online venue. I suspect this company hacked Audible.com, an AMAZON company I recently used and a competitor of Scribd.
Scribd has no customer service phone number, and they do not answer their emails.
BEWARE OF AUDIBLE.COM since SCRIBD has apparently hacked their database, which is the exact same info on your AMAZON account. I talked with AMAZON and with AUDIBLE, but they could not help.

Hi Elise.
First, I must be clear: Scribd has never obtained accounts from Audible and any such accusation is without merit.
That said, I think I found your email to us. Did you also write to our support team on Nov-22 (the same day as this review), in ticket #652542? If so, I’m glad to see that we responded to your email within about a half-hour and, despite an initial mistake and false start on our part (very sorry about that!), on Nov-24 we were able to refund your charge and cancel your recurring annual subscription.
If that’s not you, please do email us at support@scribd.com and we’ll be happy to help fix this. —Jerry, Manager, Scribd Customer Service
Tried canceling account 3 different times, then was charged. Thankfully I used my Discovercard so I can dispute the charge, but seriously this company is just a scam. Stay away.
Hi Hayden. I'm glad Discover has your back, but I want you to know we do too. Our customer service team would be happy to help you cancel your subscription and reverse the unwanted charge. Would you please email support@scribd.com so we can sort this out? If you have the order number from the receipt that was emailed to you—or your username—it would be great to include those, but we can help even if you don't have this info. I'm so sorry for the frustration. —Jerry, Manager, Scribd Customer Service

Stay Away! They make this difficult to quit. They do not respond to support inquiries. This is not remotely worth $8.99/mo. My personal experience with them is poor. Was difficult to get them to acknowledge I quit. From the research I did while trying to quit - looks like many others had the same experience. BAD!
Hi James. I'm really sorry you had such a hard time canceling. I tried to reach out to you here 1 week ago but I haven't heard back so I'm trying once more. It looks like we responded to your support ticket #619825 within 8 hours of it being submitted (on Oct 10), canceled your subscription, and refunded your recent charges. If you tried to reach us before that and were unsuccessful, I sincerely apologize and welcome any information you have about how and when you tried to contact us. Also, I included an additional offer in the private message I sent you here last week; please check it out. --Jerry, Customer Service Manager, Scribd.com
STAY AWAY from Scribd.com, unless you love losing your money to a site that lies to you. My subscription was supposed to last until 10/21/14 and today is 10/1/14 and they blocked access to my account -- unless I want to pay another $8.99, which I don't. Their selection of books is mostly Oprah's Book Club and choice little else.
I'd rather go to Amazon's Kindle Unlimited. At least Amazon doesn't LIE to you and cancel your account. Scribd can pucker up and kiss my (@$$) cheek.
I'm really sorry to hear about your trouble! It sounds like you might've somehow gotten logged out of the account with your subscription, or something strange has happened to the subscription. If you're still interested, please email our customer service team at support@scribd.com. I'd really like to help clear this up and make up for the lost time. Once you email us—or if you already did—please send me your ticket number and I'll be sure we investigate. --Jerry, Customer Service Manager, Scribd.com
This is scam! I signed up with them and bought a solution manual for my text book for 45 dollars. When I logged in through my ipad to view the solutions manual, it kept telling me that i am only viewing a preview, and I couldnt get access to the entire manual until i subscribed for 8.99 a month! I couldn't view a book i paid for! I tried emailing them several times, and today I tried logging on and it doesnt let me saying I have the wrong password. I use the same password for everything, so I know that cant be possible. So I click the "forgot password" and it says they will email me instructions to reset it. They never emailed me. DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THEM!
Hi Mahshid. I'm so sorry for the frustrating experience. I tried to reach out to you here 1 week ago via private message but I haven't heard back so I'm trying once more. It looks like we did help you with your login problem on September 11 (in ticket #599795) and you said you were able to log in, but we were still trying to help fix your purchase and we haven't heard back from you. It looks like you've since been able to read the book you purchased, but if you're still having trouble on your iPad, my colleagues and I would be happy to keep trying to help; just let us know! --Jerry, Customer Service Manager, Scribd.com
Do not use this website! I subscribed to it for a book I needed for a 5 week long session. I requested to cancel my membership, and they are still billing me 5 months later. If I wouldve known this was going to happen I could have bought the book for less than what I have paid them already.
Hi Angela. I'm sorry to hear about your trouble. I tried to reach out to you here 1 week ago via private message, but I haven't heard back so I'm trying once more. I can’t find any previous correspondence between us, and I know it’s been a little while since your post, but we’d still like to try to sort this out. Would you please email us at support@scribd.com? Include the order number from your receipt if you can—or your Scribd username—so we can find your subscription in our system, and we'll try to make this right. Once you email us—or if you already did—please send me your ticket number and I'll be sure we investigate. --Jerry, Customer Service Manager, Scribd.com
