“Pretty simple (so far) to open an account with Treasury Direct”

Kim C.
6/10/22

I opened an account today with Treasury Direct, to buy I-Bonds. It was a smooth ride. Yes it took maybe 30 minutes to open, but all seems to be fine so far. At the end of opening the account, they have a review and this was posted as of what the people have reported on this website: Excellent 62% Good 28% Fair 6% Poor 4% I followed an online tutorial that made it pretty easy. Just check, and check and check again all your numbers. Happy investing.

They really tout how converting your paper bonds to digital is easier to manage. IT IS NOT! Do not use Treasury Direct! I log in to my account one day and can view my bonds, transfer, sell but the next time I log in, they are gone. Who knows where they went! The site is a maze of hidden or ridiculously small clickable words, and navigation is confusing. Treasury Direct could be described as a scam. They have a thorough FAQ page which is deceiving for anyone looking to create acct.

It just is the worst design I have ever seen and too many times it after I click on a tab when I'm in it locks me out and I have to call a number to unlock my access. I would give a 1/2 a Star r No star if I could.
I did 42 years Federal Services and this is nearly the worst I have seen on a Federal site H/R or financial services.

Awful!

Worst website for a financial product that I have ever tried to use. Make several requests for the one time password. When you finally get it the site states that it is wrong (which it wasn't) and locks the account. Done with this. Withdrawing all of my money. The web designers are idiots.

For over 20 years the site remains the same. Account access stinks, weird accounting proceedures, always formating errors on the Dashboard & PDF file printing,,, plus Bureau of the Fiscal Service hoops to navigate thru. Good News is this is a excellent safe place to save money for your Senior retirement years & I have never lost a dime. I-Bond & T-Bill one-stop shopping on a goofy platform developed last century.

This explans why you should hire based on qualifications and not off skin tone. Another failure from the US and they keep adding up. The SLA's or ETA's are a disgrace. But coming from a country that hasnt won a war since WWII that explains it.Maybe hire some of those illegals to help you out! ID10T

Tip for consumers:
Everyone knows our government is a failure hence look who is elected president. This company stinks worse than Bidens first wife and kid!

I call their customer service because I can't log in (not because I entered my password/security questions wrong -- no their $#*! just doesn't work period). I listen to a condescending answering machine and hold for 30 minutes while at work, only for an impatient representative hang up on me after 5 minutes. Like $#*! me right, it's okay that I waited 30 minutes for their $#*! system while at work but if I can't produce the required info in 10 seconds I get hung up on.

Also in their infinite wisdom they're only available 8AM-5PM Eastern time on workdays, cause $#*! the rest of the country right? People in the west coast clearly don't have jobs / don't pay taxes so they don't deserve customer service and must be ready to call at 5AM-2PM.

Total disgrace of an institution funded by taxpayer dollars.

Was trying to get information on T-Bills. Entered treasurydirect.gov into the search bar and clicked the link. Keep getting the following message "This site can't be reached. treasurydirect.gov took too long to respond." WTF! And I'm not paying a broker for my piddly little investment.

I am trying to cash out matured EEs and have the cash deposited at my bank.
Now, after three month of inaction, they send me a letter that I first suspected was from a scammer (and maybe still so). It was factually incorrect and full of spelling errors! So far it cost me $900 in lost interest and there is no end in sight!
HOWEVER, I upgraded my rating to two stars because I finally got through by phone (called at 8am and was put on hold for 'only'30 minutes). My concerns were noted and I was told they would be reviewed.

Do NOT open an account with Treasury Direct. I attempted to change the bank account linked to my treasury direct account and now my account is locked. I had to submit a form notorized by my bank. Now Im being told it will take 6 months to make any changes. They are now basically holding the money from my t bills that have matured and not giving me any interest on them for 6 months. The customer service is horrendous and the website is flawed. Instead buy your t-bills in the secondary market because you are basically getting the same return.

Call at 5AM to avoid long holds and if you want something to whine about, try Fidelity, where they are professionals at misinformation and asking you 'how much are you planning on bringing in?'. My star rating is scored on the curve. These people at TD are doing very well given how underfunded and in demand they are. I taught myself how to maximize the site, i.e. I set up multiple links to several bank accounts, payroll direct deposit, and I use the C of I as my sweep account. Much better than brokerages to earn a steady return on money needed in <2 years.

Tip for consumers:
Yes, first call Fidelity's so called Investor Solutions dept *******548 and ask their employees some questions that you already know the answer to and see how many different incorrect answers you get, so you have a point of reference for evaluating TD. Here's a question you should definitely try: Tell them you want to transfer a TreasuryDirect T-bill to Fidelity and what is Fidelity's routing number and Bank for transferring T-bills to Fidelity. You will get multiple answers.

We're locked out of our account because their repeated security questions were not answered correctly. The call back number is a big fat joke. They close at 5, and will not put you on hold in the queue after 2pm mountain time. That's 3 hours before they close. This is totally unbelievable, they can't work past 5. This makes this whole system a big joke, and typical government bureaucracy, where no one cares. This is so stressful

I've paid taxes to the US Treasury for 60+ years. I tried creating an account and they claim they have no record of me. They want me to go to bank to get a form certified then snail mail it back to them. There is no immediate internet or phone Customer Service. They reply "we're too busy to answer any questions". It would be interesting to know what they're busy doing. Maybe they should try doing their jobs. A total and complete waste of time, but typical of a gov't service - no accountability from bottom to top.

They have stolen 5000 of my hard earned dollars. They claim that I answered my 3 questions incorrectly. Now, I am locked out of my account with no help at all from them. Obviously, I've been ripped off.
Shouldn't the feds be investigating this outfit?
Ps I needed to select one star to be able to submit this. As far as I am concerned, they deserve zero stars and some lawsuits.

I have been trying to change may linked bank info now for 6 weeks and all I get is the run around. And since I complained 4 weeks ago about the time it was taking, they now claim that my account was not "authorized" and that I need submit docs I submitted last year when I opened this account. Absolute rubbish - resubmitting these docs will generate another 6-8 week delay. Even with the now high interest rates for I-bonds, I would think twice before investing with this terrible organization.

They tease you with higher rates, you attempt to create an account but can't for whatever reason, so you call, and get NOWHER! 1 1/2 hours of recorded crap, then it rings, and rings, more recordings, more rings, and no one ever picks up! I hung up after 2 hours! Imagine trying to cash in a bond... Is no one trying to fix this joke of a system? Our government doesn't care about the little guy, simple as that!

Tip for consumers:
Don't bother calling Treasury Direct, and you can't even go to the bank nowadays to buy a bond.

There website is awful. I can't buy an Bond because they say the bank account is wrong. I have to fill out a long paper that takes 12 weeks to process or call. I finally got a human and they put me on hold again. Waitied 10 more minutes and the call dropped. Still no service. They got my number but I doubt they will call back. Its been about 15 minutes. No call back.

Make sure you put in the info correctly the first time.

It was a rough start, hold for 6+ hours several days in a row, being told by customer service each time that despite the website saying I had to call they couldn't help. But have hope people—wonderful Bob in RM finally came to my rescue. He was a solid 20 out of ten but overall this system was the most painful experience I've ever been through.
Just have hope folks and keep calling.

I have no idea what contractor the government hired to create their website but it's third world. It takes forever to open accounts and the security questions are insane if not impossible. If you get locked out, you're doomed. 45 minute to one-hour waits and then they hang up on you. You literally can't get to your money. There is hell on earth and it's Treasury Direct.

Don't invest or use the site.

Called last week and was told to hang up as it was too late in the day. So tried at 1030 ET and am still on hold. If this were a bank site the Treasury would be fining them for such poor service. My wife tried to buy I-bonds and was told there were problems. She would need to fill out form, get a signature guarantee and mail. While waiting on hold voice said it might take 13 weeks to resolve.
Why doesn't this site have zero stars for really atrocious sites?

Customer support is non existent. I was on hold for 3 and a half hours yesterday trying to get my account unlocked and finally gave up since I have a life and things to do. They won't communicate via email unless you login and email them. So if you're locked out of your account your only option is to call and they don't answer. Find another way to invest your money. There is no way I'll ever spend another penny here.

After having spent the last 3 weeks daily attempting to reach Treasury Direct by phone, I've sat on hold for several hours at a time. No one to take my calls and my account is frozen. No instructions on how to fix it, no email help either. If you mail in a request it can take up to 13 weeks to even get an reply. This is a horrible predicament for customers.
