If I could, I would give this site 4.5 stars. The half star would only be removed because there isn't a great deal of content. The catch is that there isn't a great deal of content YET.

This site is very clean, smooth and entertaining if you would like to pick up a new coding/programming skill or refine an old one. It is very interactive and ad-free. I will be bookmarking and visiting frequently, anxious for new classes!

REASONS TO USE:
[1] You would like to learn how to program
[2] You would like to brush up on skills you used to have
[3] Clean, ad-free

REASONS TO LOSE:
None.

  • turntable.fm

Amazing that this hasn't been rated yet. Great idea for a site and if you like music, it's the spot to be.

The basic premise is that you get to choose songs (whether uploaded from your computer or from turntable's library) and other people in the chat room will "vote" awesome or lame. If it is voted lame too many times the song is skipped.

Find a room with the style of music you want to hear and its a great way to discover new artists (or rediscover old ones) of a genre you are interested in.

You are given an avatar and when people like your music you can eventually get cooler avatars.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] You are a music lover
[2] Clean ad-free site
[3] Connection to all sorts of social networking sites

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] You don't like music.

Great site to fill time. If you are an artist, it may let loose some of your creative juices as you try to use different colored sands to create artwork. There is a large gallery of work done by other artists that is amazing.

The site has sand sound effects too, making it an altogether relaxing experience. The interface is simple, featuring 3 main keyboard keys to control everything and a couple of clicks on the mouse.

Even if you are not an artist, you may find yourself spending a couple of hours on the site throwing sand about.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Great time killer.
[2] Relaxing and simple interface
[3] You are an artist looking for a brain stimulation
[4] Ad-free

REASONS NOT TO USE:
[1] If you are not an artist you won't likely return to the site too often

Average. Everything about this site is average. It is predominantly filled with puzzle style games, monopoly, mahjong, etc. I can't give it any less stars because some people may get some enjoyment from the large collection of puzzle style games. For me, however, there is no need to return to the site.

It is your typical program where there are lots of games to play and they sucker you in by letting you obtain "badges" for game accomplishments.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] You love puzzle/board games

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Annoying ads

  • Vocaroo

1/6/12

Let's start this off with a quote directly from the site itself:
"Vocaroo is provided in the hope that it will be useful, however we don't accept any responsibility for anything that happens ever (be it a result of you using this service or not). If nuclear war occurs because a Vocaroo message gets lost in the ether, it's not our fault. Disclaimers are wonderful things :)"

Vocaroo.com is nifty. It is an incredibly straightforward and simple way of sending your voice to other people. You can send it to their email address or download the audio file direclty from the site. It also provides you a couple of different ways to post that sound on the internet.

It really depends on the user how much use you will get from this site. Personally, I won't use it much as I rarely need the capability of sending my audio to someone without using other tools I already have.

It would be a great thing in the future if they could add some audio effects of some kind to your recording. We'll see!

It is, however, completely ad-free and couldn't possibly be simpler to use. There are a couple of bugs, but as addressed in the very first quote, they already realize that.

REASON TO USE:
[1] You want to send a voicemail to someone's email address or just record/listen.
[2] You want to post a recording onto your own website
[3] Simple interface.

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Bugs during the development process
[2] If you have no need for this service

  • PhysicsGames.net

12/31/11

Again, another gaming site. This one is a marginal improvement on boredrightnow.com and notdoppler.com because it has nothing but physics games which require a little more interaction than your standard point and click games.

Either way, it is still the same "whole-bunch-of-little-games" type site and isn't really worth continued visits.

The same advertisements of the other two gaming sites plague this site as well.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Interesting physics style games
[2] You're really bored and like little games

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] You're not into games
[2] Annoying advertisements
[3] No reason to continually visit

  • Not Doppler

12/31/11

Yet another game site. Admittedly, I spent a couple of hours on this site toying with the different games, and it is obvious that someone spent a lot of time making some of them. Still, it is just another game site with games that will entertain you for a couple of hours at best (unless you are really into cheesy little games).

It has a slightly better interface than boredrightnow.com, but is essentially the same exact carbon copy game site.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] You like cheesy little games
[2] You are incredibly bored and have time to waste
[3] To honor the time someone spent making all these games

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] No real sustainability (reason to continue visiting)
[2] Advertisements
[3] Unoriginal

  • Bored Right Now

12/31/11

If you are truly bored, right now. You could probably get some entertainment from this site. There are tons of sites that are similar and there is nothing on this site that is so great that I will bookmark it and return when I'm bored later.

For me, this site is like the 9.99 computer game collection at walmart. It has tons of games. Countless games... but none that are worth playing for a long period of time.

This site gets three stars from me because it isn't original, has "wait 30 seconds" advertisements, and just plain doesn't have anything special about it.

Conversely, it gets as high as three stars because there isn't really anything absolutely terrible about the site either.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] You're extremely bored
[2] You like games
[3] You don't care what site has the games

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Annoying ads
[2] Not original
[3] "Nothing Special" factor.

  • lifehacker

12/31/11

Lifehacker.com is a very diverse site. You will find a variety of subjects, tutorials, videos, and other stuff that you may find in other places, but not in such a collection as this. You can find news and technology also mixed in with walk-throughs and great photos.

There is almost too much to look at. For this reason I don't spend a lot of time on lifehacker, but that doesn't warrant taking away from the rating of the site because of my personal preference of simplicity. Great site all said and done.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Great variety of material
[2] Constantly updated

REASONS TO LOSE:
None.

  • DeviantArt

12/30/11

Great resource for images of all types. At this site there is: Digital Art, Traditional Art, Photography, Artisan Crafts, Literature, Film & Animation, Flash, Designs & Interfaces, Customization, Cartoons & Comics, Manga & Anime, Anthro, Fan Art, Resources & Stock Images, Community Projects, Contests, deviantWEAR Design Battles, Journals, and a few other odds and ends. It is a vast collection of digital material and a useful resource for any project you might have going on.

I have not even begun to scratch the surface of what this site has to offer.

Advertisements are unobtrusive and navigation is simple. Great site!

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Vast collection of digital material
[2] Simple site navigation and free membership
[3] Unobtrusive ads

REASON TO LOSE:
None.

  • Lilla Dolce

12/29/11

This site features a variety of crochet patterns for sale digitally.

If you are into crochet, this is a hidden gem that not many people know about. Site navigation is extremely simple and appealing. To purchase items you are ported to paypal.com for another intuitive purchase process (if you are a paypal user). All content is emailed to you upon purchase.

Just to give you an idea of the customer friendly atmosphere of the site here is a snippet from their store policy page:

"If your computer crashes within 12 months after your purchase I will resend your patterns to you for free. If your computer crashes after the 13 months from your pattern purchase you will need to re-buy the pattern."

The one down side of lilladolce.com is product variety and quantity.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] You are into crochet
[2] Friendly store policies
[3] Easy and appealing navigation

REASONS TO LOSE"
[1] You are not into crochet
[2] Needs a larger product base

  • Crackle

12/28/11

I've not had the negative experience that others have had on crackle. Yes, there are advertisements, but it doesn't bother me by virtue of the fact that I'm not paying a dime.

There is a good variety of content (a lot of which I cannot get on Netflix) and a very intuitive and appealing interface. By signing up for an account you can rate what you watch and also view rated R material.

If it were not for the advertisements I could confidently give this site about 4.5 stars. The content is great, but could always be expanded.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Appealing and easy interface
[2] Completely Free
[3] Good variety of material

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Periodic and repetitive advertisements

  • Us.army.mil

12/26/11

For army veterans and active military soldiers and family members this site has been a headache for quite a while now.

For starters, it is incredibly slow and painful to navigate. It attempts to do so much that it does very little. It is packed full of links to other websites making it nothing but a link portal. The sight features a tedious email system and a confusing file sharing process. For it being nearly 2012 already I can only describe this site as "backwards technology".

The one saving grace is that it contains some army news that you won't find in other places and provides an opportunity to find and contact fellow soldiers.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] If you're in the US Army you have no choice
[2] News and contacts

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Bulky, slow, tedious
[2] Confusing file sharing and navigation

  • Niggermania

12/26/11

This site really doesn't deserve even one star.

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Ignorant
[2] Bad site design
[3] Racist
[4] Has the "Total Garbage" factor

  • Grooveshark

12/25/11

Not sure why or how this exists but it is awesome. If you want to listen to music and you have an internet connection you're good to go. Giant assortment of music!

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Giant music library
[2] Free
[3] Did you really need a third reason?

REASONS TO LOSE:
None.

  • Pixlr

12/25/11

Simple. Free online application that allows you to edit photos and images. Contains all the basic layering and adjustment tools. If you register for the site you can save your projects and templates as well.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Free
[2] Contains all the tools for basic photo editing and creation
[3] Allows you to save your work online

REASONS TO LOSE:
None.

  • Audiotool (Des Pudels Kern)

12/25/11

If you are into audio mixing and editing this a great site. You are presented with an online application that allows you to mix, record, and apply effects to sound. Mix together a song or any other type of audio that you would like for free.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] No download required
[2] Nifty audio mixing tools and effects
[3] Totally free

REASONS TO LOSE:
None.

  • Cleverbot

12/25/11

This site has the "neat factor". You might find yourself chatting for an hour with a computer. Old Quick Basic users will get a kick remembering how they used to try and make this type of A. I. back in the day. Chatting with the cleverbot is very addicting at first.

I can't give it a full 5 stars because after you've seen it, there really isn't a good reason to keep going back to it unless you are very easily amused.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Fun to try the first time around
[2] Pretty clever system with the "neat factor"

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] No real reason to continually use it

  • FitnessKeeper

12/25/11

Kinda neat site that helps you track your fitness. It allows you to map your run-routes, gives you estimations on how many calories you lose during your exercise period, and can provide you with analysis of your workouts and post basic information to twitter and facebook.

20$/yr or 5$/mo will make you a RunKeeperElite, unlocking more detailed graphs and analysis.

You can also download a RunKeeper app to take it with you on the go.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Simple interface / easy to navigate
[2] "Kinda Neat" factor

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Not a necessary thing if you aren't constantly active
[2] Costs money for detailed analysis

  • Desktop Nexus

12/25/11

Hands down, greatest source for wallpapers and photo images on the web. Combine a user-friendly atmosphere with tons of user uploaded content and minimal ads and you've got a winner.

The site detects your resolution and displays the appropriate size image and allows you to browse content by category or popularity.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Tons of content
[2] Free and very minimal advertisements
[3] Easy to navigate / Very user friendly

REASONS TO LOSE:
None.
