Again, I can't give it a full five stars because of perpetual and annoying advertisements. Users of the original YouTube (before it was purchased by Google) will remember it as being an ad-free community without obstructions before every video and things that you have to close to get out of your way.

On the other hand, of the video sites that are out there this is among the best for content. There is a massive user-base and a lot of unique and original content to look at. You really could spend all day on YouTube if you had no life at all.

Several artists, actors, musicians and comedians have made their start on YouTube so it is a good place to see/find/provide talent.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Massive user-base
[2] Diverse and extensive content library
[3] Aesthetically pleasing

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Annoying ads (though not as bad as some other sites)

One star away from being 5 star simply because it forces you to pay extra for the newer, better movies by signing up for dvd delivery. It's cheap either way but its annoying to have access to 2/3 of a trilogy, being unable to watch the one part of the trilogy you really wanted to watch.

Instead of shelling out 100+ bones a month for your standard internet + tv combo, you can pay 8$/mo for access to all of their online content (which is decently extensive) to watch as much as you want. TV shows, movies of all genres and even a fireplace. Which I watched today during the Christmas festivities.

For a few dollars more you can get dvds mailed to you (newer content than what is available online)

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Incredibly cheap compared to the alternative
[2] Large library of content
[3] Convenient, instant access

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Content is a few weeks old (if that matters to you)
[2] Content for kids online is not very extensive or new
[3] If money is no object, pay for the latest and greatest instead

I spend a lot of time on facebook keeping up with friends and playing those addicting games. I've had a few people contact me that I really didn't want to contact me, but overall it has been pleasant.

The games on the site are addicting, yes, but also annoying. They constantly pester you to add friends and pay real money for fake money (horrible idea). In the middle of gameplay they will pop up an annoying box telling you about a discount you don't care about.

Default privacy settings are sketchy, so make sure you take a close look at them before revealing superfluous information about yourself.

The interface periodically changes without warning which can be confusing.

REASONS TO USE:
[1] Large user-base
[2] Addicting Games
[3] Aesthetically bearable

REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] Not necessary if you keep up with friends via other means
[2] Potential Time-Killer which can prevent you from doing things you NEED to do

  • Fluther

I have been on fluther for a couple of years now. I haven't left simply because I can't find another website that is comparable. Visit this site if you just want to: muse about philosophy, talk about the meaning of life, get into a religious debate, or congratulate each other on being on the site for a long time. In this regard, it is not so much a Q & A site as it is a discussion site.

Fluther is NOT the place to go for answers regarding technology or a specific field of expertise. E.G. If you ask a question about a new motherboard, chances are your question will go unanswered indefinitely.

Reasons to use it:
Ad-Free
Great Aesthetics
Some good people

Reasons NOT to use it:
Favoritism
User-base is overwhelmingly Liberal (Which is fine if you're Liberal)
User-base is predominantly Atheist (Which is fine if you're an Atheist)
Moderation is extremely strict (to an annoying degree)
