My cousin who used to work here recently told me that they are going out of business. They are simply clearing out their inventories now and after that's done, that's it. I believe that's why so much of their site is on back order. If you would be concerned about customer service in the future for any of your purchases now, then be wary of this.

These guys have always had very competitive prices.

I ordered an engraved ipad, ipad case, and ipad camera kit on Feb 8th. Noticed that with expedited shipping they promised to have the package to me by Feb 14th in time for Valentine's Day. When I placed the order I noticed I put my old address and called them the next morning to change the address. I was afraid this would cause a delay or problems with the shipment but was told everything would be fine. Through tracking I saw that 2 packages were shipped Feb10th, the ipad via ups and the case/kit via fedex.

I started tracking the packages, and everything seemed on course. As the receiver I could not see the actual delivery address only the city. (Both my old and current address are in the same city.) On morning of Feb 12th, the fedex status was changed to signed for and delivered. I did not get this package or anyone in my household. Also saw nothing from UPS that day. By Feb13th morning (Valentine's Day having passed), I saw a status update for UPS for a tracking exception for wrong address.

I called Apple right away and asked about the packages. I was told that the delivery addresses were correct and to call fedex and UPS myself. I was already wary about this since as the receiver I could not even get the exact address info from the tracking. UPS told me that the delivery address was the old address and that they had received no notifications from Apple about a change. UPS was unable to change it for me since I was not the sender and was told to call Apple to send them a notification. I called Apple back and Apple actually told me that the address was correct and that UPS was wrong. How about investigating the issue for me since something was obviously wrong instead of having me call both parties multiple times and pass along messages back and forth.

Regarding the fedex package, Apple finally started an inquiry into it a week later and I was told that I couldn't get a refund or a replacement until the inquiry was completed. Fedex told me that the package was delivered to my old address and had received no notice of any delivery address change either. Go figure.

Very poor integration by Apple with their shippers to handle any changes/problems as well as very poor / unwilling to act customer service representatives. No chance for any email or online support either. Had to take time to call them during weekday business hours. They answer during weekends but don't really take any actions since everything requires business days.

Here I am 10 days after when I was supposed to have received my stuff (and over 2 weeks since the order) and I still don't have everything. At least Apple was kind and generous enough to refund my $12 for a failed expedited shipment. What a failure of a Valentine's Day present.

If I could return everything I bought I would but I stupidly had it engraved...

  • Barnes & Noble

I wanted to share a recent shopping experience. I was looking to buy three books and ship them internationally (to Taiwan). I also wanted these books as soon as possible. I started with Amazon since that's where I usually order my books (and use the free shipping option within the US). When I looked at shipping to Taiwan, I saw that the fastest international shipping option for my books would be around $75 (and the total for the 3 books was only $100). So I looked around.

On Barnes and Noble, the fastest express international shipping cost me ~$50 so I was able to save over $20. So, when you are shopping for things online, check not only the prices of the items, but also the prices for different shipping options because it can matter a lot. (For the slowest international shipping option, Amazon was cheaper.) Be sure to shop around for each situation.

  • GoDaddy

8/27/10

Four things really bother me about GoDaddy.com. One is their incessant "customer service" phone calls whenever you have a domain expiring. Related to this are their even more annoying calls from customer service asking you how they are doing and if you are happy with their service and if there is anything they can help you. STOP CALLING ME ABOUT THIS CRAP.

The second thing is that they send you a TON of emails. Really really spammy feel. Also a lot of times the sales coupon codes they send you don't even work.

Third thing is that when you register a domain, you have to go through (seemingly) a million pages of web tools and options that you can purchase. No, I only want to register a domain thank you very much.

The fourth and last thing is that I've done some light web hosting (shared hosting not dedicated hosting) of some less important websites through GoDaddy. (I would never attempt to host anything important on GoDaddy.) Their hosting tools are terrible, outdated, and slow; and often your site will lock up and be very school. Utterly ridiculous. After reporting many times about a slow website, they moved me to another shared host and it was still slow. Really really bad.

They have some great deals on some domain registration and other web stuff, so I only rate it a MEH not $#@!.

  • Gmail

8/27/10

People already know about gmail for its email capabilities.

There is now a new capability in gmail for making phone calls around the world using your computer and mic. Phone calls in the US are FREE until the end of the year, and the international rates are supposed to be very low (I didn't look into the exact rates; just spouting what's on their blog). It's a great looking feature worth checking out.

  • IQTest.com

8/27/10

This site allows you to test your IQ. It's something you can do for fun. Their IQ test is pretty quick to do. People going to IQ sites should beware of spam or stupid runaround sites that never show your score unless you buy something or click through some spam edu offers. So far, this site seems ok on that front.

In order to see your score, you will have to enter your email address, and they will mail you your score. I didn't opt for the detailed report for $10.

This part of their FAQ cracked me up:
"The mean score is currently 108.447 (Confounding variable: The lowest IQ holders will not be capable of using the internet to measure their own intelligence.)"

  • Escents

8/11/10

I had never heard of Escents products when I was living in the US (since in North America, they only have stores in Canada). In Taiwan, you can find these guys in any department store. The Escents section of the store always smells great, and you can tell that their products are of the highest quality. The prices in the department stores in Taiwan for Escents aromatherapy products are pretty steep.

When I found this website (which offers free shipping over $100), I was really happy since the prices are much much more reasonable. Compared with department store prices, you can easily save 33% to 70% on the website. The website features different special deals and sales, and their email list will notify you of different specials going on.

I personally use their diffuser with essential oils at nighttime, and it really has improved my quality of sleep. They also have great soaps, skin care products, hair care products, and body care products. Check them out and try them out.

  • BizChair.com

8/6/10

I first read about this website back around 2006 in some news story about how a 14 year old started this business (in 2001) with a $500 investment and started selling office chairs out of his garage. I became interested and checked out the website and saw that it was very professional looking with full customer service, company, and help details. I decided to give it a try as I was in the market for a new desk chair at school.

I had no problems placing my order for a mesh desk chair, and there were amble item status updates during the shipping process. I received my chair in less than a week and with minimal assembly I had my brand new spanking desk chair. It was very comfortable and served me well. I would dare say it was comparable in comfort to my Herman Miller Aeron chair at home (for which I paid more than five times in price versus this new mesh chair). The material of my new mesh chair was sturdy and good quality. After two years of use, I was going to move and I sold the chair to some other student. It was still in excellent condition (could not tell it wasn't brand new).

About a year ago I was looking for some inexpensive glasses after the coating from my last pair of glasses started rubbing off (after about 1 year). That pair of glasses was covered under my insurance and was free (and would have cost about $100 retail with no insurance). I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that a pair of glasses costing $100 would have its coating come off after 1 year. I would have gone back to the store but that store was in New York and I had moved back to California.

After going to Costco for my first attempt, I didn't find any cheap glasses (cheapest was about $100 a pair which did not qualify as inexpensive for me). I googled and found ZenniOptical and decided to try them out. I was able to choose 2 frames with good quality lenses for $70 total for both ($35 each) including shipping. What a great deal! I was very happy with both pairs when I received them in less than a week.

Only out of the ordinary thing I encountered was having to measure my own PD - pupillary distance -- which I accomplished with a mirror and piece of paper. Not very hard but just a tiny little hassle. Still well worth the time and money.

Guy responds to Craigslist ads with the sole purpose of being funny and publishing the emails back and forth from the two parties. Tons of fun, if you're not easily offended.

I found the website off another's review stating that it was good for a quick laugh, but I strongly disagree. There's nothing quick about it. You get addicted and keep reading the funny posts for a long long time.

Site about poker where you can read strategy and purchase books about poker. Main thing about the site is all the discussion forums where people discuss strategies and try to improve their game. Other discussion centers around information sharing about different card rooms and conditions. Invaluable place for the beginner to expert alike. At least read about what other players are reading so you don't miss out.

The website that corresponds to a tv show in Taiwan about poker. Site has information about some holdem tourneys in Taiwan which allow you to qualify for entries to big tournaments in Macau. Seems like there's is a ton of ads (for PokerStars) throughout the website which can get annoying quickly.

  • The Onion

I love reading the "news" on the Onion. I love it when news articles from the Onion show up on the google news feed and freak people out. (I have to admit I was one such "freaked out" person by an Onion article showing up on google news once.)

  • Break

Whenever I feel a little bored and want some laughs / stress relief, I go to Break.com. Break.com is great because you get tons of funny videos of different kinds, and almost all videos are at least worth a chuckle. This is the only video site for funny stuff that I check out regularly.
