Imagine you are searching the internet for a handyman and find what you thought was a trusted site Angie's List. You plug in your job details and wait. A nice well spoken southern woman calls you and quotes you a price for the job you describe. She is so nice and knowledgeable and guarantees you this is the total price (with a yearly membership of course) after all these contractors work directly for them. She also gives you a list of materials to buy yourself to save a bit more if you like, and that's it! You're thrilled, you give her your credit card number, she signs you up for the membership and she confirms your appointment and you hang up excited to have gotten a repair scheduled. That's until your email confirmation comes. The price is significantly higher than you were quoted. So you call back the number and instead of the well-spoken woman you got before you are speaking to a man from India. A feeling of dread starts to churn in your stomach... the man tells you there was a mistake and resends an email that still isn't the price you were quoted but is a bit lower. SO you call back again, another call center out of India. You say you are concerned now and want to cancel, the agent doesn't argue and supposedly cancels everything for you, you hope, and then rudely hangs up on you. Throughout the day you still get bombarded with texts and emails from "professionals." I thought they used their own people, another lie. You finally call one of them out of sheer curiosity and ask if the price is really what you were quoted by the service. He tells you that that is just for the estimate! BUT THEY DON'T AND WON'T TELL YOU THAT! Whatever you are quoted IS ONLY THE PRICE OF THE ESTIMATE, EVEN IF THEY SAY it's NOT TRUE! They are lying... You will find out once the job is done. A very unpleasant surprise to be sure. In my case it would have been an extra $750 surprise, thankfully I canceled when I did. What a shame they have become a scam. Angie's list is no longer a trusted site.
