PeopleLink's VC offerings (both instavc & UTP along with their hardware lineup) have a long way to go before becoming a world class product. The User Interface is really confusing for both UTP and Instavc but i must say that its improved a little bit in the latest version of Instavc. They claim that these solutions work in conditions where very less bandwidth is available (like 100kbps) but we found the results to be otherwise. The video still runs but there are so much artefact's that you cant even recognize the participants on the far side. Audio works without an issue but then again this is advertised as a VC product. When it comes to the hardware offerings, all the camera's and processing hardware are OEM from china and you can find them in alibaba.com being offered by alot of vendors on that site under different names. So its not even a ODM product. We also noticed that unlike other vendors peoplelink implements very weak security for their products. On example is that while a meeting is in progress, any user having the meeting room id can barge in and join the meeting. There is no lobby functionality of any sort available to ensure that the meeting moderator can decide as to who can attend and who cannot. This is a common feature in most of the common VC products. Another important find is with their hardware offering. Peoplelink advertises that their FX codec to be their hardware endpoint but we found that its a dell optiplex desktop pc with the badge in the front swapped with a peoplelink logo. It even boots up with a dell logo to a windows desktop where there is utp installed. When we confronted peoplelink regarding the same they mentioned that in the indian market the pc is considered a codec and they havent had any issues with customers. We found this hard to believe because a PC is not a codec and offering from polycom, lifesize etc have codec's which are purpose built devices and not just "pc's". No where in the site or datasheet for the FX is it mentioned that it runs on windows 10 and that its a PC.
