Hi Chris, this is Shell with Collage.com. The velveteen is about as thick as our fleece, however, the material is much different. The material is a more plush, silky material. Personally, I prefer the fleece for displaying and decorative blankets, and for covering up with, I prefer the velveteen because it's a more snuggly material.

I haven't ordered blankets from other companies but have now ordered several as gifts. Each is beautiful, well received, and much appreciated (have always chosen fleece for clarity of image). The customer service has been great, too -- superior to most online sources.

I use the velveteen blanket as a spring blanket in WI. Temps in the 50s during the day, a little chillier at night, and I'm usually comfortable under the velveteen. I don't have a way of measuring the thickness, and its still not what I would call a "thick" blanket, but I quite like mine.
