I paid $125 for a recorded online class. The description stated that the artist "teaches and shows." In fact, there was barely any verbal instruction. The segments filmed were mostly silent or a couple sentences here and there that didn't have much value. When the artist did speak, it was redundant statements, "I'm mixing this color and this color" or "I see purple in the reference photo." There were too many close-up shots of the artist's face. Not quite sure what that was all about. The filming of her actually painting consisted of her contemplating brush strokes and slowly doing one stroke, hesitating, and the another stroke. I've never seen any artist paint so slow. Once or twice, a man's voice in the background was heard asking a question: "Why did you highlight the eye twice?" Artist says: "I like to stack my highlights."
I have taken over 85 online workshops and classes. This so-called class was a waste of money. The artist stated canvas in the beginning, when she was using a Gesso board. The artist did not respond to an email. Simon whose name was on the invoice with an email address did not respond to my email. There is NOT a phone number to call, only an general email on the website. I emailed, got a delayed reply from someone saying they were short-staffed. I stated there was barely any verbal instruction. She said, the class is "to work through on your own." Really? That is not what the description stated. If I knew that, I would not have paid for the class.
There are free art classes on YouTube with artists offering and providing endless tips, instruction, etc. I paid $125 and and received nothing for my money spent.
Before you pay for a class at Drawing America, look at their website to see that there isn't a phone number to contact someone. Send an email to see if you even get a response.
Also, when you pay for a class, Drawing America plasters your name on Google as a "member" of Drawing America.
There are far too many other artists that offer great instruction in their online classes.
