“Keen Does Stand Behind Their Boots”

Mark R.
1/8/24

In 2010, I had bought my first Keens. Had been a Merrill guy before. I really liked the fit and the wear of everything Keen except a nylon eye went bad. I contacted them, and they offered to help me replace the boots four years later--not the entire amount but enough to say, "We stand behind our boots when you stand in them." I have now just bought two more pair, in 2024, after the penultimate 2019 purchase. I wear them a lot--and hike a lot. Some serious miles in NY, VT, NH, and ME. Thanks, Keen!

“Keen Footwear, No Soul”

Karen A.
12/5/22

I did contact Keen Footwear to return a pair of hiking boots I had bought for my Grandson who is two years old, he could not get his foot in them, never worn. After having me send three sets of pictures and many e-mails, Christmas time…. They would not help me. I have purchased shoes for my whole family online with Keen, and still? No help. At a time when people are struggling to put food on the table and shoes on kids feet, shame on you Keen. No so "Cool" after all I guess…..

It is unfortunate,I use to be able to count on them as a quality outdoor hiking shoe. Sadly the craftsmanship has gone way down, they just fall apart. Will be going back to Merrill, never should have strayed, it becomes a serious safety concern if you're on the trail and your boots fall apart. Shame on Keen, what are they thinking?

I had the hiking boots for 3 months and the sole on both shows started to come unglued. Additionally the waterproofing only lasted for a short time. Customer service replaced them under their warranty process. Unfortunately I really didn't want another poorly manufactured product.

I have been a lover of keen sandals. The key words being "have been". Where did the flip flop style sandals with the big toe guard? Those were the best flip flop/thong style sandal of all time. Then they are gone. They were so, so good! Bring them back Keen!

Been buying keen boots for over a decade. Tried the size I've always used and after a couple weeks I developed a blister on my big toe. I purchased 1 size larger and that worked. Called and tried to return original about 42 days old. Took the pictures they asked for and they replied, sorry, out of return window & they look used. How do you know if they work & fit well without wearing them? I spent $450 in less than 2 months & now basically have to throw a pair of good boots away. (I will donate) Product is good, but don't expect to return anything (without jumping through hoops) & then it's still, good luck!

I purchased my Keen walking boots about 9 moths ago. Ssv *******. They have only been used for occasional street walking. Already the wear pattern on the heel and ball are worn smooth and the upper fabric is already splitting above the toe line. I honestly don't know what to make of such a shoddy product as they were not cheap. I don't recall the exact price but somewhere in the region of US$200. I would have expected far more from this brand name and indeed this product.

I live in the mountains of the Philippines. I have one pair of Keens, and one pair of Hokas. I figured I would put theses shoes thru the daily demands of living here. I will say don't waste your money on Keen. Mine have ripped. The Hokas are hanging tuff and have been worn much more than the Keens. As you can see from the photo I have already glued them once.

Been buying Keens for 30+ years and loved them. Recently bought keen hiking boots that lasted 4 months with mild street use. Faux leather strip above sole failed. Who uses Faux leather on any kind of shoe. Shame on Keen!

I was trying to buy shoes made in the USA and that were non toxic. I came across keen shoes from another website that claimed they were made in the USA. Their website basically says that they are free from chemicals, I'm not sure that is true. After spending $120 on shoes because I trusted what they were advertising in their website I went to amazon to look for another pair for a bit cheaper. We'll when I went to check out there was a proposition 65 cancer warning?! Also on Amazon it says they are made in Cambodia? I messaged them asking about this and asked if they could cancel my order, not only could they not cancel my order but they didn't even answer me about the prop 65 warning. This makes me distrust this company, I don't care how much they advertise on their website that they are humanitarians and trying to save the earth. I'm not putting toxic shoes on my feet. I may as well buy shoes made in china for a lot cheaper. Very disappointing.

I have been using my Targhee Vent Keen hiking boots for a year now and I love them! They have a cushioned footbed and a roomy toe box, which has prevented any blisters or discomfort on long hikes. The boots also have a supportive ankle design, which has helped me to feel stable and secure on uneven terrain. They are also very breathable, which has prevented my feet from getting too sweaty or overheated. I would definitely purchase another pair!

I have worn Keen sandals for years (purchased from retail stores). I purchased a pair on Keen website a month ago. Had a defect in a loophole on one sandal and fit was significantly tighter than all my other same size Keen sandals I have had before. I emailed them from their website twice since long hold times to replace and after a month of no reply I finally reached Keen by phone after 45 mins hold. I received the absolute worst, unacceptable customer service I have ever received even when I spoke with Manager she was VERY RUDE and all I was asking for is a pair in a size that I could wear. I have never received such rude service when the customer wants the product that they can use. The employee was rude and did not resolve such a simple issue. To have such horrible customer service on what is a premium priced sandal is a deal breaker for me giving them any future business! I will never buy Keen footwear ever again! Shame on Keen to lose loyal customers over such horrible service when they could simply reship the correct size like Zappos, Amazon, and every other online company! Buy other brand sandals where the company values your satisfaction and gives service in the cases there are both defects and fit issues. Additionally they removed this same review from their website as others have also posted so their website reviews carry no validity. Do your research if you choose to buy.

Purchased a pair of boots while we were on holiday in Wales. Very comfortable to wear. But after a year and very occasional use, the soles started to seperate and let water in. These were returned to the retailer and a replacement pair returned. Unfortunately they haven't learned from their manufacturing defects and the replacement boots again seperated from the soles a year later. Its a real shame as they were very comfortable but even with light use, not in the slightest bit durable. Wouldn't recommend and certainly wouldn't buy again.

I am an active hiker and have to rely on shoes to keep your feet safe and sound. I've owned Targhee II mid hiking boots. They are comfortable to wear with wide toe area shoes, I have to admit. However, they do not last. I've bought the boots about 6 month prior to my long anticipated 500 mile hiking trip to Spain. First thing that went out was the shoe laces. They just fell apart and could not tie them in the middle of hiking day. Then after about 100 miles into the hike the waterproof fail at the front toe where it bends near sole area. I had to live with wet feet the remaining miles of walking, not to mention smelling feet due to wetness in the shoes. Then about another 200 miles later, after rubber part of heel wears out it's exterior cushion wears out so fast that I had hard time finishing the walk. Limping while walking. After the trip, I complained this to the Keen and they are not going to do anything about this. This is not going to be my hiking shoes anymore.

I'm unbelievably disappointed in this company. I've had 3 pairs of their hiking boots 2 of which I got from warranty claims because the sole of my boots delaminated in weeks. I recently bought a pair of their work boots where I had the same problem and had to make another warranty claim. The company was good enough to give me a voucher for the value of the boots and so i thought I'd pitch in an extra $60 and get a slightly more pricey pair of boots. When I received the boots, it was just before Christmas and was off work by the time I tried the boots on and found they were too small It had been more than 30 days since I ordered them when I contacted the company to return the boots for a larger size they said that I was over the 30 day limit and they were not going to replace them for me and we're not going to return my $60. I can't even begin to say how disappointed I am in this company. I will never be buying their product again

These are simply the worst shoes I've ever had. Keep wearing my under armour shoes because these are impossible to tighten as they've stretched after less than 40 days. The lace style is garbage as well.

I bought a pair. But when I retired my old shoes and wore these for a day... I found out there was an arch on the outside of the foot screwed up my walk I couldn't wait to go home and change shoes. Keen honored there customer satisfaction... They sent me another pair of blems... Sent those back they sent me another pair, with bumps on the inside of the toe area... Traded those in for another pair of blems... Gave up the whole shoe idea and went to their sandals... And yeah the right sandal was deformed... If you have to have a pair of keens I suggest you go to a retail outlet and try them on and walk around for a few minutes before you decide you need them... In my opinion they're absolute beautiful garbage... Good luck... you're going to need it

Tip for consumers:
If you must have keen..... Go to a retailer that sells them and walk around for a few minutes before you decide you have to have them,.. in my opinion don't waste your time...

I used to chuckle at reviewers who started their review by telling readers they only gave one star because they couldn't give zero, but now I'm one of them. My order for a pair of Keen shoes was a debacle from the beginning.

I was looking at two different pairs of shoes on two different websites, one of which was keenfootwear.com. Both sites were running Memorial Day sales and the cost of the shoes I wanted was similar on both websites. On Keen's website, however, they offered an additional $10 off if I signed up for their newsletter. With the additional $10 off, Keen's shoes were a bit cheaper. I decided to order from Keen.

With Keen's shoes in my cart, everything appeared in order. The price Keen showed was the correct sale price and included the additional $10 off and shipping was shown as free (See screenshot1). I used PayPal to pay. Beware if you use PayPal on Keen's website. PayPal offers no confirmation screen after hitting the "Pay with PayPal" button. Once you hit PayPal's button, the buyer winds up paying whatever the retailer charges to his PayPal account. Unfortunately, PayPal allows a retailer to charge whatever amount they want to the buyer's PayPal account irrespective of what the retailer told the buyer the price would be. PayPal gave me no opportunity to confirm that the price Keen was actually charging my PayPal account was the same price Keen showed for the shoes in my cart. Well, guess what? It wasn't. Keen charged my PayPal account $10 more than they told me the shoes would cost when they were in my cart on the Keen website (See screenshot2). They added a $10 charge for shipping despite showing free shipping when the shoes were in my cart, effectively reneging on the additional $10 discount I got for signing up for their newsletter. Without the additional discount, the Keen shoes were no longer the cheaper of the two I was considering.

I emailed Keen's customer service right away and told them I felt cheated, and I wanted to cancel my order. I got a response from Erica at Keen who gave me vague assurances that she would pass my complaint on to the proper team who would make everything right. Erica told me if I still wanted to cancel my order to let her know, and that she was "looking forward" to my reply. I immediately responded to Erica that I didn't trust a company that just tried to cheat me out of $10, so I wanted details. I asked her to tell me how much of a credit Keen was offering and how they intended to get that credit to me.

Silence.

I got no response from Erica. I guess she wasn't looking forward to my reply that much.

An hour and a half later, still without any response to my earlier request for details, I emailed Erica again and told her without specific information on the credit she vaguely offered, I didn't want the shoes and told her to cancel my order. I then placed an order for the other pair of shoes I was looking at. I had to act quickly because their Memorial Day sale price was ending that day.

It was pretty bad up to this point, but it got worse.

Two days after telling Erica to cancel my order, and without any further response from Erica, I got an email from Keen telling me my order shipped! So, I had two pairs of shoes in transit.

The Keen email telling me my order shipped included a link that said:

"NEED HELP? | Our customer service team is here to help! | Click here to get into contact."

I clicked the link. I told them my sad story. I called them dirty names. I got an auto-responder telling me how much they love hearing from their "fans" and that it typically takes 1-2 days for customer service to reply. Thirteen days later, I got a response from Cat at customer service. By this time, the shoes had been returned and received by Keen at their facility in Kentucky.

Cat apologized for the "confusion" about my return (but not for trying to cheat me out of $10) and assured me I would receive a full refund within a week, including my shipping charges. Cat told me that refunding the shipping overcharge was a "one-time courtesy," suggesting that Keen will cheat me with impunity on future orders.

In addition to the complaint I made to Keen, I also opened a complaint in PayPal's Resolution Center to complain about Keen's overcharge. I told PayPal my sad Keen story. I also took the opportunity to give PayPal a piece of my mind for enabling shady retailers like Keen to cheat people by allowing the retailer to charge a PayPal account more than the retailer told the customer the item was going to cost. Despite sending PayPal screenshots of: 1) my order in Keen's cart showing the cost to be $86 with free shipping; and, 2) the actual charge Keen made to my PayPal account of $96 ($86 for the shoes and $10 for shipping), PayPal denied my claim. "Based on the merchant's response and the information we have to date, we have denied your case," they told me. PayPal said I could request, by mail, all the documentation they used to arrive at their decision. I did mail in my request for the documents but haven't received them yet. (UPDATE: Six months after requesting the documentation PayPal used to deny my claim, I still haven't received it. I'm guessing I won't ever receive it. I used to love PayPal and looked for opportunities to use them. They were easy to use and fair with buyers in the event of transaction problems. However, their ongoing expansion from their lowly beginnings as a Ebay payment service to an internet-wide e-payment service has put them squarely in the corner of sellers over buyers. My experience with them on this transaction is evidence of that.)

I'll only use PayPal on future online orders when I have to. They've failed to own up to their part in this disaster. PayPal is the cheater's enabler. I'm done with PayPal, too.

But wait, there's more!

Two days after denying my claim, I got a second email from PayPal telling me my claim is approved, and I have a credit waiting for me in the amount of the shipping charge. Happy days! The second email references the same Dispute Case ID number as the first email but didn't mention that PayPal had already denied the claim. PayPal just pretended the first email didn't happen. Go figure. A few days later, Keen refunded the cost of the shoes. Between the (ultimately) approved shipping claim from PayPal and the shoes refund from Keen, I got back all the money that I paid on an order I never would have placed if Keen had been honest about how much they were going to charge me.

I've always heard good things about Keen's footwear. My wife owns a pair of hiking shoes and likes them. The product is good, but the people are scoundrels. They overcharged me. They communicated poorly and arrogantly. They shipped when I told them to cancel. Most importantly to me, they've never acknowledged that the origin of this fiasco was Keen telling me the price was $86 but then charging me $96. It was a comedy of errors: all theirs, all preventable by simply charging me the amount they told me the shoes cost. That's what all the honest retailers do.

There are plenty of reputable companies that sell comparable quality, outdoor footwear: Merrell, Teva, Salomon, Rockport, Timberland, etc. Consumers don't have to deal with shysters like Keen. Cat, if you're listening, you don't have to worry about me trying to get future unjust shipping charges reversed. I'm not keen on Keen. I'll never deal with them again.

Tip for consumers:
Run the other way. Try Merrell, Teva, Salomon, Rockport, Timberland, etc.

Products used:
None. I returned the shoes I ordered because Keen lied about the cost.

I purchased a pair of their NXIS Evo Waterproof boots at a 25% discount on Keen's website. Shortly after the warranty period of 1 year, I noticed that the waterproof coating was cracking in multiple places. They are light summer boots, so I may have worn them 4-5 months over those 13 months. I was grateful that they were willing to still consider a warranty claim, which they did and approved. So far so good. But here's the kicker. I expected that they would replace the shoe or allow me to replace it, but no. They provided a store credit for the REGULAR price value of the shoe (before taxes - oh how wonderful it must be to live without having to consider HST) but with the stipulation that anything bought with this store credit had to be bought at REGULAR PRICE ('cannot be combined with other offers, sales, etc... OTHER OFFER? This is not a voucher, this is a warranty case!). So, now if I were to purchase that same shoe, I would have to shell out another $30. Quite frankly, I am not throwing good money after bad and purchase a shoe that already failed me once and I will not do them the favour of buying anything at their hugely inflated prices.

And just as a side note: This shoe now sells at $128, instead of the $158 that I paid.
And that I don't really mind. I bought them at $158 because that's what they were worth to me.
Shame on them for wanting force me to pay $185 for this crap!

And honestly, I hate to say all this. I loved Keens - wore Koven and also Uneek for years (although the first pair also fell apart after a year - thanks to Mountain Equipment Coop and their reliable store warranty, it wasn't a problem). I am done with Keens. Bye, bye.

Tip for consumers:
Just don't use it.
If you still want to buy Keen's despite their dubious business practices, go to a retailer with reliable store warranty (Mountain Equipment Coop comes to mind, but their warranty has changed in recent years too).
