“Sid's Bikes NYC damaged my frame during routine service”

Dana K.
7/27/17

I took my mint 2008 GIANT REIGN XO to Sid's for a tune-up / over-haul. Paul, the service manager personally inspected my bike and wrote me up. I pointed out a problem I was having with the rear linkage rubbing a cable directly below the seat. Paul offered to re-route the cable to the other side of the seat tube. Three days later I returned to pick up the bike. Upon my arrival, I go straight to the service desk and greet Paul. Instead of saying hello, Paul immediately asked me if I knew that my frame had a dent. I told him I was not aware of any dents. He then pointed out a new dent in the back of my seat tube. I asked Paul how that could have happened and he responded that someone probably sat on the bike without enough air in the shock, causing the swing arm to contact the seat tube. The dent also happens to be in the same area as the re-routed cable - an area of the frame that I reviewed and discussed with Paul when I brought the bike for service. Paul denied any responsibility for the damage, claiming that the bike was covered in mud when I brought it in. My bike was clean except for a little dirt below the crank. I also noticed several new chips in the paint on my fork's crown which Sid's re-installed as part of the overhaul. On top of everything else, the bike did not shift properly after the tune up. I immediately notified Larry, the manager of Sid's Bikes about the problem when I picked up the bike. He promised to investigate. I also contacted the owner, Alan Schulman who also took no responsibility for damaging my $4,900 full suspension mountain bike. Neither Larry or Alan took any responsibility for the damage to my frame during the overhaul service. I cannot recommend Sid's Bikes for service. I will attempt to sue for money to replace the frame in small claims court.
