“Getting too big for its boots – offering increasingly poor value for money!”

Swee Q.
12/1/22

I have used the AA - of which I have been a member for some 4 decades - for both pre-purchase car inspections and breakdown services. Disappointingly, I have noticed that their service has become increasingly user-unfriendly, sluggish (untimely & convoluted), difficult to access & bureaucratically nonsensical/annoyingly unhelpful i.e. Providing a worsening service for increasing membership fees. For car inspection services, I have recently used a major service provider which delivered a service every bit as good as the AA's but at 60% of the cost. Additionally, unlike the AA, it was very easy to book an inspection. The AA invariably had me fill in lots of details only to tell me that I had to call an operator, who then, for various contrived reasons, ended up charging me more than the online estimate. Today, I called to book a breakdown service on my app, but the robot kept insisting that I do so online or on my app. When I tried the latter, I was unable to login. I wasted no less than 40 minutes trying to get through. It seems to be clear that the AA whilst revelling in its large membership numbers is patently failing to upgrade its infrastructure and capacity. I am now looking at their biggest competitor with a view of joining them - and terminating my AA membership. The AA truly has gone down the pits; adding insult to injury. PS: I finally got through to an AA operator who proceeded to tell me that (even though my car is taxed) because the MOT had run out a short while before (I have been away for over a month, and today was the first time I driven the car), that they could only transport the car to a garage at my expense! Why would I do that when I know that the AA charges a premium on everything they do?!

I pay for roadside assistance. The one night my car wouldn't start before work so I called for assistance. The operator told me it would be about an hour. After an hour I called to ask where the person is and if they're close, the operator responded by telling me nobody was coming because he couldn't get hold of anyone. Mind blowing as it's a 24/7 service and it was 10pm. He suggested I call a taxi and that the AA will reimburse me for it, I must just get a receipt and forward it to them and it will take no longer than 10 days. That was more than a month ago now. I've received no feedback and multiple non responses to my emails which have now turned quite ugly in frustration. €120 that I didn't budget for caused by a lack of service for which I pay for is in serious bad taste. What's even more troubling is that if I was stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere with my wife and small child and could not get a taxi would we have to sleep in the car on the side of the road because the 24/7 service isn't really 24/7? It's a lie! Basically stolen my subscription fee for a service that isn't a service and then cost me €120 extra for my troubles. I threatened them with an insurance policy cancellation in protest if it wasn't resolved shortly and that policy has since long been cancelled because it seems they refuse to give me my €120 back. My 2nd policy will be cancelled in protest end of this month because I won't receive my money back by then. I would highly recommend avoiding AA insurance and their "when available 24/7 Roadside assistance". Absolute scam. Terrible service, they literally don't care about the business or customers. 0/5 stars

Tip for consumers:
Don’t!! There are far better alternatives out there. Biggest is certainly NOT best in the case of the AA!

Bought breakdown cover through QUIDCO site but between them have denied my claim when it was time to collect my cashback. At first my claim was tracking and everything seemed alright, but as soon as it came to the date for me to collect, my claim was switched to Declined. After calling them AA said thats because they have my address from 5 yrs ago. I haven't had a cover with AA for five years and I had to register and all, but just when it came to paying me the 20 quid, suddenly its declined.
Absolute fraud. Avoid AA pretend-to-be-cheap Breakdown Cover for £39 with £20 cashback. I could bought from many other companies for as little as £29 straight up, instead of AA's fraud of paying £39 and then no cashback. Avoid AA like the plague.
