They put a lot of focus on insuring freelancers' genuineness, which can be an annoying number of ID verifications, but *breath* and remember it's as much for my good as theirs. I've been freelancing through them for nearly six months now, and it's been great so far and looks promising for future development.

As a freelancer on Upwork, you need to have that perseverance and goal getter spirit as some clients might be difficult. As a newbie, you need to keep applying for jobs even when you have one at hand and if you seem not to land any job on your first two to three weeks, read up resources to help improve the way you send out proposals. Just keep improving and applying.
