I booked a "Charming Historical Home" for vacation with family in Cape May, NJ. We found the place utterly lacking in charm, and poorly maintained and furnished. Kitchen was dirty w/ leaking water under sink, trash in cupboards and drawers, and 2 dinner plates for a house that slept 9. Closets were dirty, baseboards were missing, and, when a doorknob fell off in my hand, the host told me "It's a 105-year-old house, you know", and left without fixing it. Beds looked slept in, linens and dishes were of questionable cleanliness, and furniture was broken. I was extremely distressed and did not stay more than an hour. I was fortunate to find a last minute rental elsewhere. I contacted Airbnb, and told them I had to leave, as the place was not habitable for 450.00/night. I wrote a letter to Airbnb and attached pictures. I was told they would not refund my money because their policy was to give the host 24hrs to correct problems. This host was so annoyed when I pointed out some of the issues, he left and took back with him the courtesy bottle of wine! And where was I to stay while he 'addressed' the issues of cleanliness and disrepair? Never again.
