The volunteers are wonderful. I can't say enough good things about them. The food ranges from delicious to barely edible--but it's a bargain and a godsend for us, especially compared to what most people are paying for similar meals.
BUT...they have a tendency to put sugar in items that don't require it. Today, for example, we were served three different kinds of vegetables and some kind of sweetener was in each one (carrots, corn, sweet potato). A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) provides evidence that people who ate the largest amounts of added sugar had the highest blood triglyceride levels and the lowest HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
