I have been trying to close my checking account ever since they bought HSBC. Man, who knew that closing a checking account that has no balance on it would take hours and hours of phone calls. Spoke to 4 reps; was promised by the first one that account would be closed. Didn't happen. Got charged $50 for reasons that are beyond me. Called back, offered to pay off the -$50, took another 3 phone calls to finally get people to understand my request. One guy even told me that my account can be re-opened any time at the discretion of the bank if more charges are posed to my checking account. So basically, I will never be able to fully shut the account because Citizens Bank can reopen it anytime? Nothing I was told makes sense.
One thing I do know is I would do everything I can to make sure I will never, ever do business with Citizens Bank again. Their lack of professionalism and the inability to provide consistent information is why they cannot beat banks like BoA, Chase, and other big guys.
