Are there other similar companies to American Home Shield that are less expensive or better?

Just save your money and buy the products when you have the funds. Home Depot and Lowes have great credit interest plans (usually 0% interest for 24 months) that assist in buying the right products. But pay it off before the 24 months are up.
I ended up having to buy new dishwasher, roof, attic insulation and so on for over $20K. Warranty company's are great at taking your money and even better not giving it back.

Just run!

I found them expensive, I had their top plan (190/month plus service call). Customer service agents difficult to understand most of the time, could never find contractors, poor communication, always found excuses to not cover items!

Their cost is not too bad, but I am sure there are better companies. I found this company to have poor customer relations, terrible in finding contractors, rotten in communications. In fact, I noticed nothing that they were good in except passing you around and not returning calls.
