“Avoid Like the Plague!”

Marion H.
2/9/23

If I had not actually seen this with my own eyes, I would NEVER have believed it could happen in 2023 in a supposedly "enlightened" Society. My boyfriend and I (both ordained Ministers) finished up a wonderful week in New Orleans at French Truck Coffee on Chartres Street. He had not been feeling well, so he went to use their ONE working restroom while I sat there drinking my coffee. Upon his return, the Asst. Manager came over to tell us – in a loud voice, in front of a full coffee bar - that her Barista was "not comfortable with you there because of personal abuse issues in her past" and that we would have to leave. Apparently, and without being too descriptive, said Barista had barged in and seen him cleaning himself up! He protested that he had locked the door, from the inside, but the Asst. Manager insisted that this was "just not possible, as it's not broken". You don't have to be a Rocket Scientist to grasp the insinuation, so I ran over to check the door, and take pictures of everything. The keypad outside the door wasn't working, and the door was extremely "springy" to the touch. It was not closing properly and hard to shut. By this time the Manager had arrived, coming over to us with a very smarmy "knowing" look, and echoing the Asst. Manager by asking us to go, and that the "lock is not broken". We refused, and it got very heated. As I took her to the one working restroom to show her the door, the Barista was passing by. The Manager called her, and she ran inside the bathroom (presumably to hide) and I watched as she used ALL of her weight to push open the door, without knocking. This has obviously been her M. O. People were gathering, so I started to record the Manager. I told her I was, and she said "Good, because I've BEEN taping you". Illegal Act #1: Louisiana demands that one person knows they're being taped, before proceeding. She also let slip that she'd had the door repaired 3 times because the lock was broken. Even though she denied she'd said that later, I have it on tape. Is this really the way to treat your customers? My bf was completely mortified! Could this not have been handled better than this? I have NEVER been so angry in my entire life. Upon our return to NYC, we called, among other places, the Louisiana Health Dept, which confirmed (Illegal Act #2) that the law states "one working bathroom for customers and a separate one for staff". They also called us back, after Inspection, and confirmed to my bf that "French Truck has been cited for this, along with the fact that the locks had been found to be broken, and had now been fixed". Finally, my bf received a call from French Truck's Head Office, asking what they could do to "make this right?" Really? My bf is far kinder than I would have been. He settled for a Gift Basket. This was 10 days ago. SO FAR: NOTHING. NADA. ZILCH! I give this place minus 100 Stars.
