“I have used WeChat daily for four years.”

Geoffrey H.
6/16/20

I have used WeChat daily for four years. I use both versions, WeChat for mobile phone and WeChat for Windows 10 downloaded to my laptop computer. My experience has been that this communications platform is reliable, fast, bug-free. There has been no issue with adding new contacts. Similarly, the deleting of contacts has been a simple process. Approximately 90% of my use is with my laptop computer. I unreservedly recommend this WeChat application.

What the hell is the matter with the customer service on this site? I've been writing to customer service for about three months asking why the person that I send a friend request to doesn't get it even though after I type in her number, it says that it was sent successfully. I know that it is the right number that she gave me. I haven't gotten one reply back from customer service. What the F is going on with this site? They don't understand English or are they just so goddamn lazy not to write back? I can see why that website gets terrible reviews. It would be different if they wrote back. Any other members have the same problem as me? Anyone ever hear from the $#*!ty customer service? So pissed off!

GUYS: if you ever use the shake function and you come across a girl name Haggar Griffin, she is the former porn actress named Eva Lovia. Check her out! She is like most of the women on this site, drop dead gorgeous but don't have money and will ask constantly to buy her either Google Play cards or ITune cards. What a whore!

Worst possible user experience. Too slow, heavy and buggy.

Crashes way too often. Adding a friend is so cumbersome. It just hangs... Not user friendly at all.

I use Wechat on a daily basis, I find it very good, need to refer back to a previous message search for it. I find it better for texting than Whatsapp. Easy to block and unblock friends. No messages go missing. Translates text messages and it has an image translator.

This app is a must have if you want to go to China. Although it is not very convenient to use, but its popularity in China makes it impossible to do without it there.

If you get a Hong Kong phone and try to use WeChat to pay for necessary things like food, taxi, train, the MFs block your account for a measly HK$100. No customer service. Nothing AT ALL! Don't even download this. Go with WhatsApp, Telegram etc etc. It's just a bull$#*! app. Just to see how much of a BS app this is, I bought THREE (3) HK numbers and THREE (3) mainland numbers and they ALL gave me the same f*cking problem! Don't use this app. Tencent should get their act together or perish.

Lived in China for close to twenty years (before deciding to move back to Singapore), and in China, believe you me, every man, woman and their pet canaries have this installed on their phone - WeChat is the predominant software used to communicate.

Likes:
Ooo, this can go on forever. Where do I start? The software supports communication with people added to my friend list in multiple languages; communication is not limited to just text-based but also supports video chats with multiple people simultaneously; it's freeware and costs nothing to use; I can post photos / videos in my 'Moments' section ("Ooo, I just bought this outfit", "Ooo, I'm having this for lunch", "Ooo, there's a rainbow in the sky" etc) so I can be the envy of all my friends; I can take photos with it which can be sent directly to friends via chat or uploaded to the aforementioned 'Moments' section; I can leave voice messages, which is v helpful since I my fat fingers on my small keypad results in a tonne of typos (plus, I'm just plain lazy); I can send files (nothing over 25MB); and it even acts as a phone, allowing phone calls to one or multiple parties.

Dislikes:
As with all Apps, there are and will always be bugs. The people behind WeChat always seem to fix bugs and quickly as they find them (because there are many) which means there are new versions pretty often. This is really helpful if you're using a rather new phone (say, the iPhone 10,11, or whatever number it is these days. 138?), however if you're not, these new updated fixes normally will result in slowing the program, or worse, your phone, down.

Also, while one of the most powerful features of WeChat is the ability to use it as an payment portal, paying for everything from utility bills to street food vendors, it's also their most problematic and irritating attribute.

For starters, in order to access the financial features of WeChat (the ability to send and receive payments, or 'auspicious' red packets from friends and family say, during Chinese New Year - whooo hoo!), I have to first register and be authenticated. To do that, I'd have to have a bank account in Mainland China (I don't have to be a Mainland Chinese, but the bank account needs to be opened in Mainland China - just in case you wondering if I can open an account with say, The Bank of China in Singapore and link it to my WeChat account).

That's all fine and dandy if I were still in Mainland China and can waltz into any bank to open a savings account, but since I'm not, well, I cannot access their payment abilities.

Next, let me delve into their payment feature. Called WeChat Pay (or WeChat Wallet), it truly is a very powerful payment tool (accepted by vendors in many many countries, not just in China). Using it is as easy as scanning a QR code or transferring to and between friends on my list. It's a convenient way to pay for my phone bills or even pay for cigarettes (this is while I'm back in Singapore since many vendors accept WeChat Pay as a payment method), but when there are 'too many' (sometimes as little as two in quick succession) transactions, WeChat will simply disable your account because it apparently deems buying Coca-Cola from 7-Eleven as 'suspicious activity'. Frustrating with a capital F.

Ooo, and remember I mentioned above about the 'Moments' feature? I'm in the personal protection equipment business (no, this is not an advertisement), so I like to take photos (good lighting and all that) of my newly arrived products (masks and stuff, and no, this is still not an advertisement) and proudly showcase it on my 'Moment's. Guess what? Account disabled yet again. Why? No idea. Perhaps something vaguely related to 'marketing unsuitable material'.

Trying to contact customer service is near impossible. I'd have better luck discovering the Abominable Snowman. Writing in to WeChat asking for help, or at least to understand the reason (which of the rules and regulations did I flout?) they disabled my account will always result in me chatting with a bot, whose response is never helpful. No matter how specific you phrase your question, their reply will always be the equivalent of 'nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah'.

Wishlist:
I understand that there are about a bazillion people in China, and thus, a bazillion WeChat users, so, customer service must be really busy, what with the amount of bugs the App frequently has, however, it would be nice to actually have real customer service agents around to reply (eventually) to questions. But since I don't expect this to happen (imagine how many WeChat would have to hire to cater to their bazillion users) any time soon, perhaps a clearer definition of the do's and don'ts would be very much appreciated. For example, stating very clearly that marketing / selling of items is not allowed, or, a certain number of financial transactions can only be conducted within a certain time frame - instead of just disabling my account because some bot 'detected non-conformance activity'.

Overall:
I still use WeChat and always will. I tend to use my payment features only when I have to these days, and choose what I share on my 'Moments' carefully to avoid any unnecessary lock-down of my account. It truly is the predominant communications software that the world, not just China, uses.

Account put on "protected" status because of lack of use. I followed all the steps to reactivating it--even having a friend attempt to verify me--but it never worked. Contacted WeChat help on the website (can't on the app because cannot access the app) to no avail. This is not a good experience for customers.

We used the app for our communication with our business partners in China.
We were pleased with the functionality of the app. But after 6 months or so, our account got blocked out of the blue with no further explanation.
Unblocking the account proved to be impossible after many frustrating attempts.

After contacting Wechat the only thing they give you is a standard reply referring to the same useless 'unblocking procedure' that won't get you any further in solving the problem.

WeChat clearly doesn't give a sh*t whether their users are able to use their app or not.

I prepaid to WeChat to make international calls to landline. It worked twice then quit working. It even deducted money from my account when the calls didn't get through. No help from customer support either.

I still can't believe HOW BAD this app registration process is. We failed to register at home, twice, because of a ridiculous "security check". They are asking you to scan your QR code from a chinese person. So we found a chinese person, but it failed, because they are only allowed to do this once per month. So we came to china, needed to get a mainland china phone number including registration of our passport. Found another chinese person to scan that ridiculous qr code, then sending/receiving SMS failed. - This app is a big piece of something. As opposed to claims on some websites, we never needed wechat or wechat pay, could do everything we wanted without it, any person claiming this app is a MUST have for tourists is spreading nonsense in my opinion. I'd rather skip China as a tourist than having to deal with this app. Fortunately, we never missed it.

The app is awesome for chat and group conversations and I can even back up my whole chat history on desktop. Yet, it removed payment functionality for US people (need to have linked Chinese bank) so now I'm just using it for chat. If I could use it to receive and send payments again, it would be 5 stars for sure

I just installed Wechat on phone & made a new account since I am a new member. The sign in was easy to fill out; however I have to receive a code in order to complete my sign in. Didn't receive a text from Wechat so I click the resend button... no luck so I tried the calling option. It Worked! Wrote down the code & typed it out. BUT NOPE apparently the code that they gave me was incorrect. Pressed the calling option again; typed in the new code & yet again incorrect code... yah I'm done... I prefer skype or facebook msg.
