I'm retired, bought Aetna dental/vision/hearing for myself and my husband. My husband is covered 80% for being with them so long, but his dental bills don't show that - they actually pay less than 50%. Why, because he's actually covered by Careington, even though the ID card says Aetna and since our dentist is in Aetna network but not Careington there is some formula. How was I supposed to know to ask about Careington network when selecting a dentist? I asked if they took Aetna - yes - so I thought we were good! Then I went to purchase eyeglasses, found some at Walmart that takes Aetna, but somehow I was supposed to know that Walmart isn't in MY network. So I ask Aetna for a list of places IN MY network, the list emailed to me shows Walmart! I call and after being transferred and waiting more than an hour to speak to someone it is explained that Walmart isn't in MY network, only for employer provided insurance. And I was supposed to know that HOW? I would be MAILED, they can't email to me, a list of VSP providers but it includes employer provided insurees too. So how am I supposed to figure this out? - I'm told I need to PHONE the list and discuss it with the retailer. REALLY? You can't provide individual insurees a list? The reply was that the list doesn't get updated so some of them might be out of business, or no longer in "the network." So despite MY efforts to get to the truth, I still have to invest MY time to figure out who will take the insurance I've paid for, despite having AETNA on an ID card! I'm NOT doing business with Aetna again and I will encourage anyone who will listen to RUN away, because it is all smoke and mirrors - promises made but after they have your money LOOK OUT!
