You have to hit the ignore button.
On the mobile version of the site, this is going to be on that list of options below your chat with the person; between the option "Shout" and the option "Edit friendship."
On the desktop version of the site, you click on the person's username, and there's a line of icons to the right of the user's profile picture. To block, you choose the one that's the furthest to the right.
