“Farmers does not pay attention to claim documents”

On April 6,2021 I received a call from a claims adjuster at Farmers tell me a claim had been filed against an insurance policy I no longer have for an accident involving my 2018 pickup on April 1st. I knew that was false because my truck was not driven on April1st. Finally after a stressful week Farmers admitted the transposed two numbers and came up with wrong policy for the claim. Why did it take a week for me to find that out?

The kitchen of our house flooded, and we filed a claim with Farmers Insurance. They gave us a thousand excuses and did not cover us at all. And then the claim remained in our records as if they covered everything, After having paid expensive insurance with them for years.

Tamara Sult was the adjuster for our case, and she looked for any excuse not to cover the damages, recording it in our records as if they had.

This is something that everyone should know before anyone makes a decision and understand this company's practices.

I went through a tornado, flooding, and a massive hail storm. The Farmers people I talked with and worked with were very nice and I'm sure they're told what to do by someone higher up. Adjuster was out in June. A restoration company contacted me in July-August and contracted to do ALL the repairs and got those repairs cleared thru Farmers, but I needed to contact a vendor they recommended for the flooring. I did, but their prices were too high for the carpeting. Told the restoration company I would shop around AND I NEVER HEARD FROM THE RESTORATION COMPANY AGAIN. Called and texted them into November, 2019. Now we're into winter and nasty weather. I started getting bids the first week in March - same time the pandemic started and finally got two people to come to my home and do a bid - only got one bid. Went to big box store and bought laminate flooring for less than the carpet to save some monies. Floor was installed and Farmers reimbursed me less than one-third - yes - 1/3 of the total cost. Said laminate was an upgrade from carpeting. Please. I'll never believe a plastic floor is better than a plush carpeting. So full replacement IS NOT full replacement. A letter they sent me said to send in my receipts when the work is complete and they will reimburse me. I'm 64, widowed, and I live on social security. Also, the repairs that I have not had done because of the COVID - Farmers has informed me they will not cover any more repairs so that's another loss. This has cost me a lot. I've used a couple of other insurance companies, but have had Farmers since I was a teenager because it's where my parents bought their coverage. NOTE: Farmers also told me that it was more costly to install laminate so I called five installers. The difference; if they lay carpet they will charge me to move the furniture because the room has to be empty - they don't charge to move furniture for laminate. For laminate, I have to replace the trim along the floor so they basically told me that they ran about the same on installation. Six in one; have a dozen in the other.

I have paid my premiums for 7 years. I have a claim on my renters insurance and they find every fault they can to not pay. I lost everything. I only got the clothes I slept in the night before. Now I am homeless and I have absolutely nothing to put in a home. But hey let's give you 4,400 1000 deductible and we've already gave you 3000. Now we are good. Why the reason they aren't paying me. They failed to change my address on my policy. Even after I gave it to them several times. So their mistake I am paying for. A week before Christmas I am suppose to be happy with how I've been treated. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Good luck on putting your life back together not our problem. That is how I feel. I'm not their problem. Do not use FARMERS INSURANCE. BEWARE!

We have had Farmers insurance for our 3 automobiles and 4 houses. We have rental property so we have to have good coverage.
We had homeless person burn a duplex we owned and they were good about getting our checks to start cleanup and rebuilding.
Our problem came because we had replacement and couldn't buy until we get money and couldn't get money until we replaced. We finally sold the apartment after we used money to do the cleanup and make safe so no one would get hurt. It's was across st from a school.

I spoke with multiple agents at the claims department that would interrupt and constantly talk over me. I am still trying to get them to approve an accurate estimate for when their insured ran into my parked car. Don't use Farmer's insurance, it has been a headache so far.

I canceled my auto insurance with Farmers because their rates were so high. I insured with another insurer and Farmers didn't honor my cancellation request. Instead, my non payment was turned over to a debt collection and it was reported on my credit rating. Can't believe they thought I didn't have the right to choose another insurer! Will never do business with them again!

I have been a customer with Farmers insurance (Farah Petion/ Goshen, NY) for years. No claims, no issues. I just received a call stating they are cancelling my homeowner's insurance because they FLEW A DRONE OVER MY HOUSE AND THE ROOF DOESN'T LOOK GOOD! Apparently, they hired a company to fly drones over peoples' house to serve as roof inspections. If I could give this company negative stars I would. This is BS!

When it came time to fix our roof, they claimed we had a Cash Value plan. Three different employees, 1 current and 2 previous, explained this happens a lot with them. Our agent failed to update our roof year, the system sends them "trigger alerts" to update it, and when they don't, it defaults the plan to a cash value without alerting the customer. I talked to many, after, that said this happens all the time with them, so I would stay away from Farmer's until they get it fixed! We never did get our money. To boot, the agent would not even answer our calls or emails, and lied to us 2 different times. I would love to just blame her, but the higher ups never made it right.

Verified purchase

My house was protected under Farmers since 2006. I had roof damage recently. I was not big. Missing some singles. I put claim, but adjuster gave me estimate under deductible. So I just hired contractor and tried repair. The contractor reported that need more singles need to be replaced to repair missing singles. Insurance company should cover them. So I forwarded email to the adjuster. He called me and said it does not cover by my policy. And I tried to tell him what I heard, he keep stopping me and kept talking "not covered"
I thought my house protected by Farmers, but it was not. I wasted all my premium for 15 years. I was paying premium never late for 15 years for this!
That is how Farmers makes money! When I buy insurance, tell me all covered and premium is little high because insurance company and policy is good.
I share this to my roof contractor, then they said Farmers is really bad on that. They recommended me Alfa insurance. So I am warning to everyone who looking for house insurance. "Do not go Farmers. Go Alfa or others. Farmers the worst"

Farmers bought the company from MetLife, since then they increased premiums and pay little for claims. I canceled my 4 policies and went to other insurance company. You should do the same!

First and foremost, let me start off by stating I've had Farmers Insurance for many years (10-12), and this was my first experience with Farmers filing a claim against my primary residence. After the experience I recently went through, I requested my policy be canceled and went through Progressive after this experience.

On the week of February 20th, our city and throughout southeast Michigan, had a wind and ice storm which impacted the durability and integrity of our roof. A few days following the storm, we noticed staining on the interior ceiling within our house. It appears the storm may have deteriorated the integrity and protection provided by the shingles, and corresponding infrastructure, allowing water to proceed beneath and enter our homes interior. Our roof has held up against the elements – protecting the interior of our home against the snowstorms and rain we've had since owning the home. It wasn't until the storm on the week of the 20th that we faced this problem. Please note our homes roof is free of trees, branches, leaves and debris which generally accelerates the deterioration and longevity of roofs.

On Monday, February 27, I secured the opinion of their roofer, asking him to inspect our roof as well. The roofing company climbed atop our roof and identified the vulnerabilities, ice/wind related caused deterioration, and areas which may have contributed to the leak. The roofing company's opinion is there are certain material items which are no longer effective and used in the industry, vulnerabilities in the valley, lifting of vents because of the ice/wind, and identified areas where water could have gotten underneath resulting in leaks within the home. The roofer made a few corrections to ensure the leaks don't happen again while I work through the claims experience.

When filing the claim, I asked the CSR whether the roofer should be present during the Farmers adjuster visit and they said no. On Sunday, 3/5, Farmers sent their first adjuster out who didn't go on the roof, inspected the damage via insider the house, and claimed the issue was because of ice damning. He then closed the claim without letting me know, stating the repairs are below the deductible so nothing will be paid. I called and talked to Farmers, questioning why the claim was closed without any follow up or communication. They indicated the status isn't really closed, ice damning isn't covered, and the claim can open back up at any time should more evidence become available. I then requested a contractor, through Farmers, come out an inspect the roof since the initial adjuster didn't go on the roof. 1.5 weeks went by before the Farmers contractor arrived. He went on the roof and said he couldn't find anything, likely because the roofer corrected the issues.

I then filed an appeal in which three individuals came out this morning, 3/22. Farmers sent another adjuster, the adjuster's manager, and another contractor to support the roofing inspection. After 20 minutes, the manager came down and said there's nothing visible with the roof that they can see that caused the issue and its likely due to the construction of the house (the pitch/angle differs by 10 degrees above our kitchens peak) and the way the shingles were put doesn't provide adequate protection against leaks. The managers conclusion was the initial adjuster was wrong, and that the issue likely existed for many years, but never made its way down to the inside of the home (shocking speculation). His claim was that the water likely got beneath the shingles and made its way to the roofing board but dried up before making its way inside. Also, if it made it way inside previously, likely absorbed by the insulation.

All in all, I'd like to state that if you're in the market for home owners insurance, DO NOT go with Farmers. They're quick to qualify you for insurance but when you're in need of their support for a claim – find reasons to deny the claim than to honor it.

- Changed my address online and yet mail kept going to wrong address.
- Then organized to cancel homeowners with sale of home. Farmers continued to bill for cancelled policy, but figured delay in mail - like the bill was sent before they got the cancellation - nope.
- Then started getting text messages to pay or they'd cancel, but it ALREADY WAS CANCELLED! How do you cancel a cancelled policy?
- Got fed up that address was still wrong, kept getting notifications for a cancelled policy and decided to cancel auto insurance to go to StateFarm.
- Now Farmers sent to us to collections that a balance is due for a CANCELLED homeowners POLICY from dates we didn't even own the home AFTER we submitted cancellation paperwork!
- We better not get sent to collections for a cancelled auto policy next!

All Farmers is good for is a little chuckle from their commercials. Otherwise - RUN!

Tip for consumers:
Go with a different insurance company. Check out other reviews - Farmers is declining. Sure they look fine on BBB, but read the reviews.

I'm writing this as a medical professional who has had nothing but problems with Farmer's Insurance paying legitimate medical claims for over 25 years. They are the absolute worst company imaginable. They won't pay claims. Patients are forced to take pain pills instead of receiving therapy, because therapy is much more expensive than addictive pain medications. Meanwhile, patients get addicted to the pain medication, regress due to not being able to get the needed physical therapy, and have their pain syndrome become permanent. Then Farmer's hires its own lawyers to defend them against the inevitable lawsuit. This company has proven itself, over three decades of my experience with them, to be absolutely the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with - bar none. Don't get fooled by their TV commercials; they are absolutely a terrible company that's in it for their own profit only, and care nothing for their injured clients.

This company of Farmer's needs to review their website. I have been trying to pay my bill 30 minutes and it keeps coming up blank on the payment page(s) - when I try to call them, their automated site goes through a series of questions then it (the call) trips over to an agent (call center). The person who answers the call at agent's office is rude and loud on phone.

I own and manages several properties in Oregon and California so when reviewing the new insurance rate of $149 a month I knew it was high. For a policy fitting my needs for this particular property value and location it was over twice the going rate. I contacted State Farm and gave them the information on the property and their quot was under $65 a month. I called Farmers billing office and they would not talk with me because they couldn't connect me to the policy even though I've been paying the bill for two years. So I called the agent, he said that seemed very high and said he would check into it. Later that day he texted me with a new quot of $75 a month, wanting me to cancel the policy and start a new. Price still too high and no excuse for gouging on the previous policy. If you are doing business or thinking about doing business with Farmers Insurance I recommend you get other quotes for comparison. Kinda underhanded and sleazy in my book.
