American Express has faced significant criticism regarding its customer service and the reliability of its rewards program. Many customers express disappointment with unfulfilled promises related to benefits and rewards, alongside complaints about poor communication and unhelpful support representatives. Issues such as deceptive billing practices and unresolved disputes further exacerbate customer dissatisfaction. Despite a long history of customer loyalty, recent experiences suggest a decline in service quality, prompting many to seek alternatives. Overall, while the brand has a legacy of prestige, current feedback indicates a pressing need for improvement in customer relations and service transparency.

I've been with American Express for over five years and every time I check into a hotel and they put me down for incidentals and I check out my money is on hold for 30 days
American Express keeps my money and it doesn't come back to me that's all they do is steal worst card I've ever had I never had this problem five years and getting worse and when you call customer service, they don't have any correct?answers for u that's all American Express does keep your money they don't refund Nothing they don't know where the money went to.
I've had my American Express card for over 5 years and in that time I've never submitted a claim for any fraudulent charges. Last month, for the first time ever, I submitted a claim for a fraudulent charge that was over $600. Customer service tried to make it sound like I was the one being fraudulent by submitting the claim. They did not help me cancel this charge or offer any assistance whatsoever. I paid off my card and I canceled it today. I know that canceling a credit card will hurt your credit in the short-term, but your credit will quickly recover in a matter of just a few months, and then you won't be stuck giving your business to a bunch of con artists. It was worth it!
Harvard has designed a test to identify a "moron". If a person has an American Express card they passed the test.
American Express used to be the top notch card to hold. And yes membership had its privileges but as of now American Express is horrible when I say horrible horrible. First of all, they tried to dissuade you from talking to a human by going on the internet chatting. Nobody wants that number two when you had a dispute. American Express was very gracious to work with you. As long as you provide a documentation. Once you get documentation now they're still questioning you. I am over American Express. Nobody hardly takes your card. Anyway, I'm getting ready to go to the other side because customer service was the only thing that really made you guys stand out. That was your signature and the way that you were handled disputes for me was golden. But now you full of excuses and you don't stand by your customer done done and done
Long story short, trying to transfer my points to another airline is taking me two weeks.

FROM ME TO ALL NEW CUSTOMERS (DON'T USE)
- points not worth the money you spend (unless you have a family of four and your outgoings are more than £3000 a month don't know waste your money on your points)
- USING YOUR POINTS FOR AEROPLANE TICKETS
If you're going to buy new tickets with your points, you need to spend above £3000 a month to make it worthwhile
-THE INSURANCE that comes with using your points, or a credit card on this AMX, it's pointless (insure Chubb security firm, a very basic very minimum insurance you will get everything has to be in your name)
Costco Citi Card - 10
Mastercard - 10
Discover - 10
No one excepts Amex because of there fees. The only card that charges you to use out of country or in country. Do your research find a better card.
While on vacation I had some problems signing in to my account. This was the start of it. A couple transactions were declined. I called numerous times to find out why and was told each time there was an issue with my card/ account and a new one would be sent. Each card was deactavated by American Express. After 2 months I findly was told that I was deceased. Oh, I asked, so I dont have to pay my bill. They said it does not work that way. I have had this card since 2015, and have had other issues with this company. This is the last straw for me. I will NEVER use this card again, NEVER.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CARD.
A couple of years back I requested an in crease to my limit, my cerdit score is very good. They deciede to decrease it witch of couse dropped my score. But wait, a couple months later they inceased it?
Do not get an American Express. To be blunt, THEY SUCK, just terrible.
Al Husband
Got email if I use my cc with Marriott I would get a $200 refund, after sending $1200 was told 3 months for credit, then in December they are giving all kind of stupid, unprofessional excuses why I can't get the credit. Not worth me using card. Very dishonest
They only allow select charges when you try to meet their promotion requirements so that you never meet the limit but not before they charge that annual charge. Then when you catch on that they are cheating you by saying you were 'short' the required spending, they will not refund the fee, even if a prorated fee return has been requested.
Thieving Crooks!
I have perfect credit and I'm leaving American Express because I'm sick calling and getting place do hold while they tell me a supervisor will 'call me' later.
Never going to happen.
They keep offering higher end cards but then demand I pay larger payments even though I have a set payment amount. They did my annual fee charge in the wrong month and didn't even notify me. I have frozen my account and after I pay off the full amount I will never use this card again.
I have been an AMEX member since 1989, continuously. Today I decided to open an AMEX savings account, to take advantage of their interest rate. So I opened the page, and began the application. (See photo below). When i got to the page to sign in, it would not accept my ID and password, said they were incorrect. Why? Because you have to lie and say you are not an AMEX customer. After checking and rechecking, I called AMEX. Guess what…TO OPEN A SAVINGS ACCOUNT WITH AMEX BANKING, YOU HAVE TO SAY THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH AMEX. That is what they told me. No, no and hell no. After 34 continuous years with AMEX, I am not going to tell a lie, that lie. Particularly when I intend to deposit a substantial amount of money, which could disappear….why? Because I lied. So beware, BEWARE! This situation is not straight up. And, when you research Reviews for AMEX….well, beware!
I have had an American Express card since 1996 and was generally happy with them until now. But then things went south with both accounts.
For what transpired with the Hilton Honors credit card, please see a separate review I have published.
This review is about the Delta-AmEx credit card, which I obtained less than a year ago. Everything was good until Oct 12 when I noticed multiple charges from Airalo Singapore for $20, $20, $4.90, and $9.90.
$4.90 was rejected by AmEx and $9.90 was never completed so it was dismissed as an abandoned transaction. All charges apparently originated from Singapore by manual entry - but their system never flagged them as requiring authorization the moment they originated (viz: $20 and $20 charges).
I disputed both $20 charges and in less than 24 hours, AmEx justified them as valid charges and reinstated them (no docs were ever provided based on which they made these determinations). After the Hilton Honors and this experience, this was the last stroke.
I have closed all my AmEx cards and would never use them again. Adios American Express!
May you learn to understand how fraud is done, how to fight fraud, how not to penalize card holders for your failings, and how to retain customers. But perhaps I am hoping too much.
I have been a Hilton Honors member through American Express since 1996 and was generally happy about them until now. Suddenly, in July 2023, they deducted points from my account. I contacted them and they directed me back to American Express. Then I wrote to both the American Express CEO and Hilton CEO. After a few weeks of investigation, this is what I am told:
"Our records indicate that your Hilton Honors account had a negative point balance of 1,392 since March of 2006. As you recently resumed use of your account, points earned from the transactions billed on your July 2023 statement were used to offset this negative point balance. Regrettably, we do not retain transaction records beyond seven (7) years and therefore cannot specify the transaction(s) that lead to the negative point balance."
But I always had a positive point balance in this account until Dec 2022 when the last points were used to pay for an Amazon order! Why weren't these points deducted between 2006 and 2022?
I think this is just another way to fleece the customers under the pretext of "we don't know why you owe us, we just know you owe us"!
I am going to close this account and move on. Adios Hilton and American Express!
Worst company Ever, Just cancelled my Amex Business Platinum and 2 other business Amex's I had. Nothing but problems with them. They claim to be some high end card for $700 a year but all these free cards now have better benefits. If you use their card to redeem for flights they charge you 20-30% more with their travel site vs going directly to the airline site...stay away from this company Visa/Mastercard are 100 time better
They provide useless cards and give us false information so that our credit score goes down. Fraud company.
Think american express has been hacked by the mycreditguide website no one can give an answer and amex wont answer either
very upset with amex
Can't get anyone deceint to communicate with -- noone understands english -- they just keep switching around think amex my credit guide is a fake and being hacked and now they have all my info
Beware of American Express. I had to change my direct debt details and missed some check boxes stating how much to take each month. They rejected the form twice saying the bank details were wrong when they were not. On the third attempt they accepted the form with same details. A few months later when I noticed a lot of interest charges and complained to them, they said that if the payment amount tick boxes are not ticked then they will pick one for me. Since I always paid the full amount before the bank account change it is interesting that they pick the payment option that benefits them the most and also it was never queried on the two occasions when the rejected the form. You will also find there are many retailers who do not take the card due to high commission, so you will need backup card. They give larger cash back then others, but if you are not careful, you will lose it in charges. Had a problem earlier in the year when they would not help with a dispute. Threated them with the Consumer Credit Act claim and they suddenly were a lot more helpful! They are a money grabbing company which is why they are not popular, and retailers don't like them.
Worst card ever, I got straight up scammed on my card, was a conplete fraud and American expressed did notjing about it, they charged me the dull amount, there costomer service and supervisor don't know nothing in how to investigate a fraud, I reached a point thinking that they do some how get a percentage of the fraud it self
The main reason for my rating is customer service. I've been enraged by it several times and the agents are dodgy when asked a direct question. The second reason for my rating is I don't like how their online accounting is set up. It makes more sense to get paper copies IMHO. The third reason is their ultra strict policies and inability to be dynamic based on situation. I literally could have prevented a fraud, but they make you go through an ignorant and (costly to the people) fraud process. I have difficulty with blatant stupidity. And the final reason is the inability to use it with some merchants. Not that I ever kept a balance, but the interest rates are just shy of 100% illogical. No one in their right mind should ever carry a balance, but unfortunately not everyone is versed in financial responsibility.
I called yesterday 9/27 to ask about my cards said I was good was planning on making purchases by end of week less than 12 hours later at 4am they have the nerve to send me an email to tell me they canceled my 2 cards no nothing even when I spoke to them yesterday they have 0 clue what there doing canceled other cards just to keep these 2 I had now I have nothing they are worthless pos litterally and just tell me well you can always reapply um no I want my cards I've had not worth it anymore Amex thinks there too good and they're not they suck
They canceled my card due to 6 months of inactivity due to spine surgery. They lied to me and said I could keep my credit history with a new card but this did not show up on my credit report. They would not fix the problem. I canceled the card after 10 years as a customer.
Answer: Terrible organization since it outsourced out to Malaysia
